How Did Christianity And Islam Contribute To World Peace
Traditions from the religions Christianity and Islam have contributed to inner and world peace. Both contributions can be sourced by both the religions sacred texts and their principal teachings. In order for world peace, inner peace must be achieved first.
Christianity’s traditions have contributed to inner peace. This can be shown through the Bible, practices for achieving inner peace and the principle teachings. The bible offers direction on the importance of inner peace and how to attain it. In this sacred text, Jesus’ ‘Golden Rule’ is “do unto others as you would have done unto you”; this communicates that one must act peacefully to receive peace in return, but first one must obtain inner peace. In Islam, inner peace is also significant to adherents, as Muslims strive to be in submission of Allah. The greeting of peace is a reminder that the purpose in life is to live in full submission to the will of Allah by fulfilling the necessities of the five pillars. Salat, one of the five pillars of faith, is the set of prayers carried out five times a day. When the prayers are done individually, one bonds with Allah, hence creating peace within themselves. It is believed that the peaceful will be satisfied as written in Surah 61:14 “the patient man is the helper of God”. This gives adherents an understanding of the significance of being peaceful by being patient. An example of a Christian organisation aiming for world peace would be The National Council of Churches Australia. NCCA launched an ‘Act for Peace’ campaign, that has the goal to reduce poverty, protect refugees and help communities through rough times. NCCA’s campaign is a clear demonstration of Exodus 23:6 “do not deny to your poor”, through the organisations strive to achieve world peace. The care for the environment, is another way that world peace can be achieved. The environment having to be looked after, is emphasised in the bible, such as Genesis 2:15 “God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work in it and take care of it”. “Peace cannot be kept by force”, it needs to be understood by adherents, so the care of the deprived and the environment is achieved and world peace is
