I am sending you the following correspondence in reference to the Department of Homeland Security and its structure. I wish to examine the arguments for the existence of this department and the concepts and information provided in my “Police Administration” textbook about the department. I ask you to consider the question “Is the feeling of heightened security worth the risk of eroding our individual Constitutional rights and freedoms?” In this memo, I will provide my opinions to you, the President of the United States of America, on how this Criminal Justice Agency is structured and whether or not it is effectively managed.…
The mission set of each and every one of the operational agencies within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is critical in the overall success of the DHS mission, keeping America free from terrorist activity. The task of protecting our nation against terror is a no-fail mission, and each of the organizations with the DHS has a critical role with their own staff of expert personnel, trained and proficient in a unique set of skills to contribute to this highly important mission. In any organization charged with providing security, it is imperative to ensure there are no gaps in the protection to be provided. Within the Department of Homeland Security this is no different,…
The Department of Homeland Security are wide-ranging, and their goal is clear: “A safer, more secure America, which is resilient against terrorism and other potential threats.” The three key concepts form the foundation of our national homeland security strategy designed to achieve this vision: The three are as follows 1) Security 2), Resilience 3), Custom and Exchange. These concepts drive broad areas of activity that the Quadrennial Homeland Security Review (QHSR) process defines as homeland security missions. It prevent, to protect, to respond, and recover, as well as to build in security, to ensure resilience, and to facilitate customs and exchange. The responsibility falls on hundreds of thousands of people from across the federal government, state, local, tribal, and territorial…
The office would oversee and coordinate a national strategy to safeguard against terrorism and respond against future attacks. The following weeks and months proved to be very complex with many different executive orders and reorganization efforts put forth. On June 18th, 2002, the proposal for a comprehensive consolidation of national security and protection agencies came together in a proposal from President Bush to congress. Homeland Security (2017) stated that the White House released a national strategy for homeland security defining three objectives including prevention of terrorists’ attacks, reducing vulnerability, and minimizing damages and recovery from attacks that do occur. The DHS was approved and became operational on January 24, 2003, and now the government agencies had to learn to work together, and figure out how to efficiently operate and keep our country…
After the attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States system went through a change in reforming government agencies to protect the American borders against any threats. The government established the Department of Homeland Security, which mission is to protect America borders against external or internal threats that could potential cause harm in our nation. Since the Department of Homeland Security continues improving the national security protection of this nation by establishing effective programs and activities…
The primary purpose of this essay is to critique the United States homeland security system and its capabilities to meet both the new issues and future challenges. Besides, this exposition will address and analyze the existing efforts of apparent dichotomy that are crucial to homeland security on one hand while maintaining civil liberties on the other side.…
* The DHS and local and state agencies both concentrate on major crimes such as drug trafficking, gangs, and terrorism. Law enforcement’s effort to prevent terrorism coincides with the DHS mission for national security and has created a system called the Homeland Security Information Network, which gives access to state and local law enforcement agencies to collect and share information with other federal, state and local agencies in order to prevent criminal activity. This computer based was created to be used by state and local authorities to have real time access to national databases.…
I would prefer that homeland security would have an “all-hazards” policy approach, protecting and assisting people from man-made incidents to unavoidable natural disasters during times when terrorism is not a prominent threat for the time being. Otherwise it would simply be occupying resources during times of peace, affecting the people who are operating in homeland security to perhaps develop an unhealthy bias towards finding and punishing potential terrorists rather than having an interest in protecting other human beings from…
What differences can collaboration make in preventing and responding to crime? The answers lie within the differences of two separate terrorist attacks in the United States that were twelve years apart. At the beginning of the millennium, the country’s law enforcement’s methods of operation were significantly different than they are today. There was not much communication between law enforcement and government agencies. “Ten years ago, our law enforcement and intelligence communities were driven by a Cold War “need to know” culture that stovepiped information and stymied cooperation” (Budinger & Smith, 2011). A decade after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which left over twenty-five hundred dead and wounded six-thousand others, the federal government recognized the need for effective…
Anti-terrorism efforts are no longer limited to agencies on the federal level. In the wake of 9/11, the federal government formed the Homeland Security Agency whose prime objective is to protect the country from possible terrorist acts. The process of gathering intelligence regarding terrorism is global. British intelligence relies on shared intelligence from the U.S. and vice versa. It therefore only makes sense to include state and local authorities as well. Over recent years, officials have taken a more proactive approach on these levels by providing anti-terrorism training to local and state law enforcement officers. The officials in the department of Homeland Security now work more closely with state and local departments in anti-terrorism initiatives because they realized that in most instances, these departments are the first line of defense. The changes in the NYPD following the 9/11 attacks signaled the beginning of a national network of law enforcement agencies working together in the fight against…

Ever since the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, Homeland Security has been the top priority of the United States government. Not only did this event start the global war on terrorism, but it also created the Department of Homeland Security. The United States is fighting terrorism at home with Homeland Security, and abroad using the military to wage a war on terrorist groups. Terrorism is a danger to the fabric of our society, they threaten our whole way of life. Homeland Security must be at the top of the governments agenda in order protect the citizens of the United States from another possible September 11th scenario.…
After the terrorist attack of 9-11, the United States made several changes to policies concerning visitors into the United States. More attention is required at the borders, airports, mail system, and intranet to protect citizens of the United States against terrorism. In this paper, we will discuss a proposal to make the criminal justice agencies in the United States better prepared for terrorist attacks.…
The concept of homeland security is not new; since the bloody birth of the United States in 1776, Americans have been engaged in securing and defending the homeland. However, the current manifestation of the expression Homeland Security was created in the crucible of modern terrorist attacks, most notably that of September 11, 2001. As Noftsinger, Newbold, and Wheeler (2007) note, today’s idea of homeland security was created in response to the increasing terrorist threat, when it was recognized that the increased terrorist threat could not be combatted through conventional means.…
