How Characteristics of Hybridization show up in A.S. Byatt’s “The Thing in the Forrest”

In a clever way the author has taken the odd yet critical monster trait of hybrid, and created an unnerving tale of an encounter with a gruesome being in the forrest. Used in this sense, hybrid is the offspring of different species; one being human and the other, an amalgam of earth and water creatures. The literary result is a genre known as monster literature. According to David D. Gilmore’s research in “Monsters: Evil Beings, Mythical Beasts, and All Manner of Imaginary Terrors”, the character blueprint for a hybrid monster usually has in it “ . . . recombinations uniting animal and human features or mixing animal species in lurid ways (Harpham 1982; Andriano 1999)”(6). A.S. Byatt creates the ideal creature in a real world setting we all recognize. The isle of England, World War II, and fresh words from Sir Winston Churchill, “But if we fail, then the whole world, . . . will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, . . . by the lights of perverted science.” This wave of frightening peril moved across the entire world of 1940 as well, with the discovery of Nazi eugenic institutions. Now the stage is set for “The Thing in The Forrest” to be later written in England. There is a prominent mouth with lips, puckered with pain, and eyes with ocean-deep blindness, combining with a tubular patchwork body. Quasi-‘washer woman’ muscles connect ‘dragon forearms’ to control ‘suckered centipede feet’. The

    In George Mivart’s ‘Genesis of Species’, Mivart thoroughly reviews Darwin’s theory of natural selection. Mivart concludes that Darwin’s theory of natural selection is flawed because it cannot account for all of the mechanics of inheritance, specifically the initial developments of useful characteristics. He disputes that natural selection can account for the passing of negative or unnecessary traits, or for individualized traits occurring in only one species. He also asks how certain developments could occur without saltations, an idea absent in Darwin’s theories, but prominent in many of his contemporaries’.     The parallel concept of humanity is highlighted through different paradigms. Shelley employs the mise-en-abyme and gothic horror form to highlight how monstrosity (and ultimately humanity) is not defined by the physical, whilst Scott emphasises this in BR through the crime fiction elements which focus on the grey areas of humanity through the simulacra replicants. The physical monstrosity of the creature is juxtaposed with the internal monstrosity of F through the combined mise-en-abyme and gothic form of the novel. The dark and gothic imagery employed to describe the monster in F’s perspective: “his yellow skin... watery eyes… shrivelled complexion and straight black lips” repulses the audience. However, through the mise-en-abyme form, readers are able to empathise with the monster’s pain: “I was a poor, miserable wretch”. Consequently, F’s humanity is questioned as Shelley delves deeper into the monster’s character, to the extent that F becomes the real monster even though he is not physically monstrous. This paralleled theme is further enhanced in BR through the ambiguity of the crime fiction form. This is shown through the simulacrum nature of the replicants and is juxtaposed to the monstrosity in F, as there is no now physical distinction of humanity.     One feature of the behaviour of mankind is the capacity for knowledge and the creative use of it. An example of this is literature, and the creature is exposed to this through the three books he finds in the “wood”. It is clear that these three books, which the creature considers to be a “prize”, have a great effect on him, but it is not so much that behaviour of man which is required to produce these books, than the behaviour of man which is presented in the contents of the writing, which shapes the creature’s attitude to life. The significance of these books for the creature is that they provide an explanation for the actions and emotions of men and women which he has already seen at first hand, as well as for those he can only read about. This enables the creature to have a more profound understanding of life as a concept and a preoccupation, and thus he is able to consciously and subconsciously construct an attitude to life which is the cause for his ensuing actions. The other significance of his access to written text is that it facilitates the opportunity to him of not only understanding the language, but learning how to express himself, speak with reason, and construct an argument. As Peter Brooks writes, “As a verbal creation, he [the creature] is the very opposite of the monstrous. He is a sympathetic and persuasive participant in Western Culture.” While I agree with this idea which is vital for the effectiveness of the creature’s plea for “acceptance” from his “father” and for Victor to “consent” to his “request”, I believe there is, on the other hand, something monstrous in the way that such eloquence, logic and persuasiveness comes from the mouth of such a “hideously deformed and loathsome” creature.…
