How 9/11 Affected My Life
Cohorts Paper
I was born in 2000. A year after I was born, 9/11 happened, and it was such a major event in our history that it changed the way we live today. Other major events that impacted my classmates and I as we grew up included: school shootings, terrorism, the Joplin Tornado, and other natural disasters, like Hurricane Harvey. School shootings have changed the way schools do lock downs. Schools are more prepared for them due to the fact that they have happened in the past. Terrorism has also affected the way we live, because of the fact that it happens so often around the world. The Joplin Tornado really affected those that lived in Missouri. I lived fairly close to Joplin when the tornado hit, and it changed a lot of people's lives.

Father's role in childrearing is slowly becoming more equal to the roles of mothers, but most mothers still do more when it comes to childrearing. Most people are accepting of people of other ethnic groups, but they are also very cautious and guarded around them. Now days, I think most people show respect for senior citizens, but there are some people that are very disrespectful to their elders. I don't think people really care now day about whether or not couples have children. It is their own personal choice, but I think if people know someone that want kids that can't, they feel very sympathetic for them. The good thing though is that those couple that can't have kids have more options now days. People view birth control as something that is pretty common now days, and cell phones are viewed as a necessity. Everyone has them, and it has made communication and other things very easy now …show more content…
Some mothers did and some didn't, but it was more common back then to be a stay at home mom. My mom told me that the father's role in childrearing has changed quite a bit. Back then, fathers didn't change diapers or work around the house as much as they do now, and they definitely didn't do as much as the mothers would. When my parents were kids, people acted similar to how people do now when it comes to people of other ethnic groups. They were accepting of them, but they were also a little guarded. In the past, everyone always respected their elders, and peoples view of couples without children hasn't changed much from when my parents were younger. The only thing is that if couples wanted kids but couldn't have them, then they didn't have very many options about what they could do. Birth control was a lot less common back then, and those who used birth control were more secretive about it compared to now, and lastly, cell phones did not exist back when my parents were growing up, so it was a lot harder to communicate with others.
The issue of cohort effects in development effects research because people of the same cohort are around the same age, and they experience the same historical events, but those of another cohort experience other historical events. These events that they experience change the way they see the world a little, and it changes the way people

What prompted the terrorist attacks of 9/11? Has the united states response to these attacks made our country safer? On September 11, 2001 a group of terrorist called Al-Qaeda hijacked 4 airliners and made a devastating attack against the United States. One plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and the other plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C. Close to 3,000 people died in the World Trade Center about 10,000 others were treated for severe injuries. I believe that America was affected by 9/11.…

In the readings for the last two weeks we have read about a variety of topics. The main point in the readings for 9/11 was that social work and social theory play a large part in individual’s lives. This is evidenced in Kondrat’s article with several theories being defined that give new insight to us as new social work students (2002). It was a main point that individuals are a product of their environment and will therefore react in ways that are affected by their environment and will in turn affect their environment. In Tregaskis’ article we learned about human development and how it was greatly impacted by Bronfenbrenner’s work throughout his lifetime (1995). His work in the human development has had a lasting and tremendous impact on the…

Have you used your cell phone today? How about the internet? Without the years of 1970-present we would not have these everyday items. In the past 45 years, Americans have experienced hardship as well as prosperity. For example, Americans experienced 9/11 which made Americans question their own security. In addition, Americans also faced the Watergate scandal, which caused them to question corruptibility of the government (“new voices, new Frontiers…."1277-1289). An important group of people living during this era was The Magnificent Seven, they became the 1st American gymnastics team to when the gold medal. The biggest terrorist event during my life was 9/11 when terrorist attacked the Twin Towers in New York. The attack of 9/11 is personal to me because my uncle was on one of the floors in building. Just waking up one morning and trying to live your life then finding out hundreds of people died in a couple of minutes is devastating. Even though America has a huge number of people dealing with security of the nation everyday there is still a slight chance of more terrorist attacks. This event devastated so many Americans and made them afraid to leave their house because of a worry of another terrorist attack.…

On September 11, 2001, a tragic event occurred, three airplanes were hijacked, two out of the three crashed in the twin towers in New York. All them were hijacked by terrorists, the mastermind behind all this was Osama Bin Laden who was hiding in Afghanistan. When I began to answer these questions myself, I started learning more about myself that I never really paid attention to before. For me, the most significant world event I have experienced was 9/11. Though I was very young, I remember my mom turning on the news and just starring in awe. She didn’t know how to react exactly, but I remember the shock on her face and how she seemed scared. I was too young at the time to really think much of it, but now thinking back to it, I understand why she was so shocked. It was an event that changed our country completely. Security at airports were made extensively more secure and people started being more aware of others around them. No one knew if there would be another attack and if there was going to be one, when it would be. So many families lost love ones and so many lives were changed forever in one instant. It taught me that I need to appreciate life everyday, because you never know when something might happen to you or your loved ones.…

In the early sixties, profound changes to old ideals and values, including parenting, were initiated, with rock music as a backdrop. For instance, researchers at Princeton University compiled data from a survey aimed at college students and discovered that, “the new decade was affecting changes in the way the general media used certain images to depict, ‘normal ’families, and that Americans were becoming increasingly accepting of single-parent families,” and that the number of households in this category has growing at a fast rate. The political and socio-economic climates were changing and these we. General media also began to change the images they utilized to depict, “normal” families. All of these things, along with the changing climates on the political and socio-economic fronts, were factors which initiated changes in the ways parents interacted with their children. Jeffrey Escoffer reported in his report, “The Sexual Revolution, 1960-1890,” that, “… attitudes about sexuality began to change as new medicines and the introduction of “the Pill” eliminated fears about contracting AIDS and pregnancy.” (Escoffer.Web) Baby Boomers have been…

If a man got a woman pregnant the couple got married and in 1960 in America thirty percent of brides gave birth within eight and a half months of the wedding, according to (June Carbone of the University of Minnesota and Naomi Cahn of George Washington University). In those days the husband’s responsibility was to work and earn money for the family and the wife’s was to raise the children and to take care of the home. According to Ms. Carbone and Ms. Cahn, “more than eighty percent of wives with young children stayed at home in 1960.” Couples ended their relationship for different reasons and I believe being a single mother is much better than living with an abusive spouse. But the lack of financial stability hurts women, children and men which can put a strain on relationships making the environment extremely…

Before the birth control pill, most men planned on getting an education and then having a family and working while their wives took care of the children. Many people are now getting married later than in the 1950’s and are more likely to get a divorce (Lundberg). Since women are now better educated and are also being hired for better jobs, they can now provide for their families. Some men no longer have to be the provider for their family; they can now be stay at home dads or choose a different career. Before there was no discussion on who took care of the children at night for many families but these views have changed and there are some stay at home dads. Some stay at home dads are often thought of as “losers” and most people think that they got fired and they are looking for job. In some cases people think that women with “man” jobs are great but not of men with “women” jobs.…

It is understood that in past times men were the "bread-winners" and females were the stay at home moms. Although some women felt as if this was not fair, there was some positive results. Positive findings being that mothers had more time to spend with their children, this being true families had a tighter bond, because they were around each other and were allowed to communicate in a closer proximity.
