The House on Mango Street / Breaking Through

These two novels are very similar in the fact that they both have a young child as their protagonist who is suffering from poverty. They would talk about how they would like to get out of the situation they are in and make something better for themselves. Also both novels have a Hope theme in their story. Panchito and Esperanza both are from a poor family and have to work more for the things they need. Panchito more than Esperanzas family but never the less they both suffer. In both stories the protagonists both want to make something better of themselves and for themselves. They want to escape poverty and have things they did not have as they were younger. They both wish to live a different life style. Both novels talk about Hope and how at the end of the tunnel there is reason and hope for reaching their goals. Both The House on Mango Street and Breaking Through are similar in the fact that they each have a character suffering from poverty. In the House on Mango Street, Esperanza hates her life, and is ashamed of being poor. She is not happy with anything and you can say she is ungrateful because she does have a home and is able to go to school, yet this is not enough for her. In Esperanza’s neighborhood there are only a few possible ways Esperanza will end up, if she does not pursue a better life. She lives in a poor neighborhood and in one that not many women make something of themselves. In Breaking Through, Panchito suffers from poverty since he was very young and he is one of seven kids in his family. Panchito and his family suffer a lot and have to work every day so hard in order to be able to have little to eat at the end of the day. Panchito’s family does not have a lot of money, and a lot of advantages many other families do. He has to grow up fast and he is determined to not let his economic status determine his future. In the story, Esperanza talks about names again, but the way she portrays them from before (in “my name”) is much different. “ The Eskimos got thirty different names for snow, I say”(35). In this way she portrays names as a fact, not much emotion behind it. “ In English my name means hope”(10), Esperanza tells you. As you can see, apposed to the other reference, this example is full of emotion. So the difference in the way she portrays them is the personal connection she makes with them.…

One of the most effective literary tool used in this book is point of view. In Esperanza Rising, the point of view is from the mind of Esperanza. It is a third-person limited narrator that allows you to hear all of her thoughts while she is adapting to this new lifestyle. As the reader, you are able to hear her thoughts and attitude towards her wealthy lifestyle and then see her mentality change as she matures and grows into a stronger person. This tool is very effective in this book because if the point of view were placed in any other position, the story would change completely. If the story was centered around Miguel or Mama’s thoughts and point of view, we would be able to see the changes in Esperanza, but we would not fully understand her thought process and see the mental maturity that she goes through. This point of view is essential for the book because it helps the book achieve the goal of Esperanza’s life change making her into a better, more grounded, person. The reader is able to see this change more effectively when completely a character arc on her self-sufficiency. She starts with a lifestyle where she did not even know how to sweep, which is almost a zero on the self-sufficient scale. She then learns that skill and moves up to being able to take care of two babies at the same time. Even though she makes one of them sick, she corrects her mistake and learns from it. At the end of the book, she is off working and making a living for herself and her family. She grows tremendously in this book and by creating a character arc, the reader can easily see her grow. Overall, the literary tool of point of view was the most effective in the book Esperanza Rising, and by creating a character arc, you are able to see the changes that she made in her lifestyle to…

In the first vignette “The House on Mango Street,” Esperanza's is not able to accept that her house will always be part of her. When she is confronted by a nun outside of her house, the nun said “‘You live there?’ The way she said it made me feel like nothing. There. I lived there.” (Cisneros 5). The way Esperanza feels embarrassed about looking at her house shows her not accepting the house as part of her. She is ashamed of how the house looks from the outside and disregards how this is the house she is growing up in. On the contrary, In a last vignette “Mango Says Goodbye Sometimes”, Esperanza is able to accept that the house on Mango Street will always be a part of her background. While dreaming about leaving Mango Street, Esperanza's notes that her old neighbors “will not know I have gone away to come back. For the ones I left behind. For the ones who cannot out”(Cisneros 79). Esperanza showing how she would return to Mango Street after leaving to help people she left behind shows her growth into adulthood. When I was a kid, about 5 to 8 years old, my hands would always get cold whenever the surrounding air is chilly. My dad would always tell me to rub them together, like you would in order to make fire. And so I did it. I rubbed and rubbed and rubbed. My fingers grind against each other from the tips of my little fingers to the base of my palm, but none of this worked. My hands still are cold, stone cold. Then my dad said after watching me rub for a whole 3 minutes: You can stop rubbing your hands when they are warm again, as rubbing would make your skin raw. I replied: But they're still cold. Then he told me to hold out my hand and he started rubbing warmth into my hands; his strong, rough hands massaging my palms, my fingers, then suddenly my hands are warm again. After a while, I wondered: will my hands ever become tough and strong like my father's?…

As a child, Esperanza wants only escape from mango Street. Her dream of independents and "self-definition" also means leaving her family behind without any responsibilities to her family. Throughout the boo, her has also faced some situation where is feels ashamed to be part of the Mango Street community and in some instances refuses to admit she has anything to do with mango street. At the beginning of the book near the earlier chapters, Esperanza feels very insecure about herself in general along with the house that she lives in. As mentioned before she doesn’t want to discuss her name nor where she lives. In the chapter of "The House on Mango Street", "a nun from my school passed by and saw me playing out front. The downstairs dromat had been boarded up because it had been robbed two days before the owner had painted on the wood YES WE' RE OPEN so as not to lose business. Where do you live? She asked. There, I said pointing up to the third floor. You live there? She responded. You live there? The way she said it, made me feel like nothing". This quote reinforces the fact of how apprehensive and shameful Esperanza is during the beginning of the story, where one can clearly see the state of insecurity of Esperanza. This is ultimately contrasted through the progression of the book when Esperanza maturity is shown in the quote," Passing bums will ask, can I come in? I'll offer them the attic, ask them to stay, because I know how it is to be without a house" through this quote you could clearly see the juristic growth from the beginning of the book. Esperanza grows out of her childish and arrogant state to a more confident becomes to feel more empathy towards others, showing her transformation into a confident mature women. Esperanza will even a homeless a place to stay regardless the state or how the house looks like, but she…

The first example is Cathy, who knows all the dangers of Mango Street. “She lives upstairs, over there, next door to Joe the baby – grabber. Keep away from him, she says. He is full of danger.” (Cisneros 12). Cathy tells her what to avoid on Mango Street, and about the people on it. And when she moves away, it lets Esperanza know now how bad the neighborhood is getting. There is also Marin, who is a role model for Esperanza because she wants to leave Mango Street just like Esperanza wants to. Marin teaches Esperanza a lot about life. “She is older and knows a lot of things. She is the one who told us how Davey the Baby’s sister got pregnant and what cream is best for taking off moustache hair and if you count the white flecks on your fingertips you can know how many boys are thinking of you and lots of other things I can’t remember now.” (Cisneros 27). Also, Marin is older, so when boys talk to her, she is not afraid, which is something Esperanza desires for. Marin is waiting for someone or something to change her life, which in a sense is what Esperanza wants. Esperanza wonders why Ruthie keeps coming back to Mango Street. “Only thing I can’t understand is why Ruthie is living on Mango Street if she doesn’t have to, why is she sleeping on a couch in her mother’s living room when she has a real house of her own.” (Cisneros 69). If Esperanza expressed feelings like this, we can tell that if Esperanza had the chance to leave Mango Street, she would take it. There is also Alicia, who is forced to become an adult at a young age, just like Esperanza is being expected to. This makes Esperanza realize that she does not want that life, and is…
