Hotel Rwanda
Hotel Rwanda “Hotel Rwanda” was directed by Terry George and produced by Sam Bhembe and Roberto Cicutto. It was released into the United States on December 22, 2004, but it released elsewhere in the world throughout 2005. The three main stars of the movie were Don Cheadle, who plays Paul Rusesabagina the hotel manager, Sophie Okonedo, who plays Tatiana Rusesabagina, Paul’s wife, and Nick Nolte who plays Colonel Oliver, the United Nations peacekeeper. I watched this movie about a week ago on July 27th with a few of my friends who are also taking this course. The movie is not part of a series, but it is based on a true story. It is inspired by the novel An Ordinary Man by Paul Rusesabagina and Hotel Rwanda: Bringing the True Story of an African Hero to Film by Keir Pearson and Terry George.
In Rwanda, there are two main ethnic groups, the Tutsis and the Hutus , who are constantly fighting for power and control of Rwanda. Genocide constantly cleanses Rwanda’s streets as people turn away in fear. Paul Rusesabagina is a hotel manager for the Hotel Des Mille Collines in Kigali, Rwanda. He being a Hutu helps his family and other people they know, most Tutsis like his wife, take refuge from the Hutu army in his hotel. Before they even reach the hotel, they get taken by the Hutus and Paul has to pay General Bizimungu one hundred thousand Francs to spare the lives of his Tutsi friends that first took shelter in their home and another ten thousand Francs for his wife and kids’ lives. As they try to settle the few amounts of people they have in the hotel already plus the current guests, the Red Cross and other Hutus and Tutsis arrive at the hotel taking refuge adding the total from one hundred to over eight hundred Rwandans. As the genocide increases, the Europeans staying at the hotel are flown out of Rwanda by the United Nations and sent back home to avoid the danger. Paul tries to get help from the Belgians and the French after the fighting grows, but the

As the Belgians came down to the weak and unstable country of Rwanda they had one thing in mind, to conquer their land. This was the initial goal of the Belgians which later turned out to be the most contributing factor to the Rwandan Genocide. It all started with the classification, done by the Belgians with I.D. cards, of the Rwandan people into two major groups which were the Hutu and the Tutsi by their physical features (Doc. 1&4). The Belgians described the Tutsi, the minority group as intelligent and skillful and gave the privileges over the Hutu who were the majority group and described as simple (Doc.4). As time passed and the power of the Tutsis got to their head they started to abuse their rights which angered the Hutu. A suspicious plane crash in April 1994 killed booth Rwandan president Habyarimana and the second president of Burundi which sparked the genocide. Within a few hours of the crash, Hutu extremists executed eleven UN peacekeepers from Belgium and started to carry out a well organized series of massacres (Doc. 4). Civilian death squads called Interhamwe had training prior to the genocide and were responsible for the largest massacres,…

Hotel Rwanda tackles a recent event in history where the Hutu extremists of Rwanda initiated a terrifying campaign of genocide, massacring approximately 800,000 minority Tutsi who had been given total power by the Belgian colonists, while the rest of the world looked on and did nothing. The Hutu killed the Tutsi people because they thought the Tutsi were being excessively rude to them. It is important to recognize the similarities in Night and Hotel Rwanda because if we did not keep a close watch on these prejudice actions, the world would be a very bitter and non-diverse place. Night and Hotel Rwanda are both based on true stories about genocide and share similar situations such as the Nazis and Hutus called the Jews and the Tutsis degrading names, the Jews and Tutsis had to travel in tight spaces, and watching people get badly beaten by the Nazis and the Hutus.…

In the middle east of Africa is where you could find Rwanda. Around 1900’s a group called “Hutu’s” had been in great power since early 60’s. Peace was at ease, no one was harmed or killed until, then came a month, that turned into within days of torture and countless assanistations. April 6th 1994 is when the killings started. All the gun shots and people screaming night and even some afternoons , people finally opened their eyes to see what really those gun shots and people shouting was really about. At least half a million people perished, “Perhaps as many as three quarters of the Tutsi’s population” (Hymowitz and Parker). Even though people didn’t care what was going on besides the people who were effected by genocide , a causal thesis of this were Hutu’s and Tutsi were not the only ones involved in seeing what was happening , eventually within a few days Europeans , the French , international community , and problems like the hate radio and ethnic group all came along.…

Tom Zoellner, writes in his bibliography “An Ordinary Man” about the period of the Rwandan Genocide. Its impact and repercussions on the people, and how one hospitality-employed leadership figure by the name of Paul Rusesabagina saved 1,268 Tutsis through goodwill and courageous negotiations, are chronically ordered and told in detail. Ominously, the author introduces you into a standard of life that to us seems inexistent.…

The international community, the United States and the United Nations were to blame for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The United States, where people would normally look for help, surprisingly did not do as much apart from watching the genocide happen. The United Nations also did not provide enough support as they withdrew all their forces during the genocide. Hotel Rwanda was a tragic true story about Paul Rusesabagina, a manager of a 4 star luxury hotel in Kigali, who attempts to save as many Tutsi people as he could by keeping them safe inside his hotel. In Rwanda, there was a tremendous amount of violence against the Tutsi minority in 1994. Paul, who was Hutu, was still extremely concerned because his wife, Tatiana, was Tutsi, which also made his children mixed. This made his wife and children a target along with the other Tutsi people. I found Paul Rusesabagina’s character inspiring because despite the genocide that was taking place all around his hotel, he still decided to take action. Paul Rusesabagina had a remarkable amount of courage…
