Hotel California

Hotel California I powered on my Nintendo Wii to get a quick game of guitar hero’s world tour, as I was sitting at home alone and bored. I flicked through the available tracks, and came across Hotel California by the Eagles; a song I had never heard before by a group I had no knowledge of. Since I had never heard the song before, I decided to go for it. I choose that track to play on the easy level being that it was my first time hearing the song, and besides I wanted to become familiar with it. And when I decide to play again on a more complex level, I would be able to land a decent score. I found myself becoming very in-tune with the song; loving the reggae and rock and roll sound it had. Unbeknownst to me I would be introduced to the song a second time in English class. I had never actually thought about the meaning of the song. We had discussed some opinions, in class about the actual meaning of the song and mostly everyone had a different idea of what the song really meant.
I did some research and had come to find out that on November 25, 2007 Henley appeared on the TV news show 60 Minutes, where he announced that the song is about “the dark underbelly of the American dream, and about excess in America.” I also learned that Hotel California topped the billboard hottest 100 singles for a week in May of 1977; and it had also won the Eagles the Grammy of the Year at the 20th annual Grammy awards in 1978. The song is highly rated in many rock music lists and polls. I understand that the song interpretations are always up for discussion; wherefore everyone has a different opinion based on their viewpoint to the lyrics of the song; and why it was written. It has been said that the song is about a patient in a psychiatric ward, a patient participating in a drug rehab but struggling to stay sober, about the struggles to living up to the American dream and, without sabotaging your life.

At first glance the song seems to be written about two people, their broken relationship, and eventual reconciliation. This may hold true with what the artist was trying to convey. The Avett Brothers write primarily about what they know, about relationships, and life experience. The personification of “Love” may be modeled after a woman, possibly one of these young men’s wives, who displayed unconditional love. The vacation in the first verse may refer to a time of separation, where “Hate” grew bitter, yet eventually realized his error, and was won over by the gentle ways of “Love.” “Hate’s” unruly and reckless behavior may have been modeled after one of these young men’s actions. I find the verse about the cab driver very interesting. Do Seth and Scott…

Music has played a major role throughout the evolution of human kind. It has been around since the days of cavemen who discovered the effects of banging rocks and sticks in a rhythm. Through the years music has been used as a medium for expression of thoughts, feelings, and ideas. The lyrics of the song are usually the easiest and least complex way of expressing these feelings. There are more subtle ways that are often overlooked though. These are the tone of voice, tempo of the music, the instruments used, hidden meanings or metaphors, and the overall way the song sounds. A good example of this is the song Kiss My Irish Ass by Frank Mackey and the Keltic Cowboys.…

“On a dark desert highway” the first line in the song. The name of the highway is not specified implying that he has never been on the highway before, also connecting to the first line of the chorus which says “welcome to the hotel California.” Which implies the same,(that he has never been there before, he did not belong, but is welcome which does implement a sense of belonging.) The line “we’re all just prisoners…

For my performance paper I went to see Jimmy Buffett at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD. Buffet is a popular country music artist. Buffett’s music is known to exhibit a high level of what is called “Island escapism” in his music. Buffett’s grandfather was a sailor which influenced him immensely in his younger age. After graduating college Buffett went on to work as a first mate in Key West, aka the southernmost point of the U.S., for much of the 1970’s.…

This song portrays a level of joy and excitement for what was being approached. The song at the beginning was paired up with the pleasing pictures of California with clear light blue skies, tall palm trees and the rollercoaster. These images of warmth and fun increased the feeling of enthusiasm that the song suggests. The lyrics from the song say things like “we’ve been on the run” and “here we come.” This foreshadows the negative events that will be displayed as soon as the traders begin to make unethical dealings. California was obviously considered a sort of treasure by Enron. The entire company and more specifically the traders felt a sense of triumph because they were taking over this state. In this scene, the song is juxtaposed with the audio tapes of the traders. This allows the viewer to understand exactly what the traders were thinking at the time of California's struggle. The filmmaker then suggests that Enron was a huge contributing factor of California's budget crisis. Consequently, the audio tapes and the song serve to uphold the argument that a human tragedy was the real story behind the dealings of…

In “Hotel California,” there are two original composers. Donald Hugh Henley and Glenn Lewis Frey. Don Henley was born and raised as an American in Linden, Texas. He attended University of North Texas for three semesters (“Don”). Glenn Frey was born and raised as an American in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Oakland Community College where he got involved with a band (“Glenn”). Henley wrote most of the lyrics based on Frey’s ideas. He sought inspiration for the writing by driving out into the desert used for films. The Beverly Hills Hotel, in which they were staying, had become literally and symbolically important point of their lives. The lyrics state “her mind is tiffany twisted, she's got the mercedes bends. She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys that she calls friends” Henley formed those lyrics based off of a breakup with his ex-girlfriend, Loree Rodkin.…

The 1960s was the beginning of a cultural revolution in America. The counter-culture of the 1960s was viewed by some as “mankind’s best, maybe only, hope; others saw it as a portent of civilization’s imminent ruin.”1 The nation’s youth began to find their voice and were slowly shaping the nation’s ideals. Music became “a medium of propaganda, identifying the young as a distinct force in society with unique values and aspirations.”2…

In ¡°The Blue Hotel,¡± Stephen Crane uses various provocative techniques to ensure that the setting adds to the richness of the story. ¡°The Blue Hotel¡± is set in a cold Nebraska town at the Palace Hotel in the late 1800¡¯s, but there is more to setting than just when and where a story takes place. In a written work, it is the author¡¯s job to vividly depict events in order to keep the reader¡¯s attention and to create colorful mental images of places, objects, or situations. The story is superbly enhanced through Crane¡¯s use of setting to develop mood, to create irony, and to make nature foreshadow or imitate human actions.…
