Host Culture Affected By Immigrants
When immigrants try to adapt to a new environment, they have to overcome difficulties such as language barrier, social communication and so on. The communication and relationship between them and the host family are also challenging. Immigrants will try to understand and adapt to the host culture because the host community is not responsible for their adaptation. For the host community, even though their culture will be affected by immigrants, it is easier to accept the immigrants that have similar cultures rather than incoming people who have culture that is very different. The host community will be affected by the immigrants as they will accept new things consciously or unconsciously. In Mrs. Sen’s, Eliot are open to the Mrs. Sen and her Indian culture. He doesn’t have any prejudice against anyone since he is only a young boy, which makes it easier for Mrs. Sen to show her nostalgia and other emotions. He became a companion of her while she is adapting to American culture. He is not like his mother, who takes unkindly to Mrs. Sen and her traditions. Her mother’s attitude makes Mrs. Sen unwilling to communicate and share with her. Mrs. Sen prefers to hide her culture from the mother instead of sharing. But the relationship between Mrs. Sen and Eliot’s Mother doesn’t improve much until the end of the story. But Mrs. Sen and Eliot become more like friends. She could get an understanding from Eliot rather than being exposed too much in American culture, which might cause her keeping isolated because it is hard to adapt everything in a short amount of time.
