HOSPITALITY SUMMARY
TOPIC 1: Historical development in hospitality

A lot of people may wonder how and when did hospitality start. Did it start off by a man dreaming of opening a lodging place, which called a ‘hotel’? Or did it start with a sweetheart grandma offering cookies and milk to lost kids on Christmas? Let me take you more in depth.

When people usually think of Hospitality Industry, they immediately think of hotels and restaurants. Nevertheless, the true meaning of hospitality is way broader, according to Oxford English Dictionary; hospitality means “the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors and strangers with liberality and good will.” The word hospitality comes from the French word “hospice”- this word is related to hospital, also referred to an early form of what we now call nursing home. (Barrows, Powers, & Reynolds, 2012, p.4). Therefore, hospitality is not all about hotels and restaurants but also for places which offer shelter and food, in other words “a home away from home”, this also might include casinos, clubs, cruise lines and the list goes on. (Barrows, Powers, & Reynolds, 2012).

Hospitality goes way back in time and the concept of it is extremely old, let me take you back in time from antiquity to the Middle Ages.

(Jacques, 2013). Taking it to the Colonial Period around 1965 where inns also where built, which are sleeping accommodations offering food as well. And then in the 16th centaury Renaissance period, there were a very high demand for inns and coffee houses, afterwards, the French revolution changed the course with Auguste Escoffier with his “Brigade System” and M. Boulanger which is the father of modern restaurant this caused more chefs come into the new world. Talking about the New world which is early 20th centaury, more hotels were made specially next to train stations in the early 1800s, spas and resorts became more popular where they believed to be medicinal, Famous spas examples: Spa at Baden, Germany. Vichy,

    The historical development of hospitality has been developed for more than2000 years. There are normally 3 different types of hospitality, which are: i) hostels ii) motel and iii) hotel. There is also self-camping facility for people staying and living in the campsites. The first early travelers were either warriors or traders or people who traveling for education or religious purpose. As there was no hotel at that time, so they pitched their tents for temporary accommodation. After the camping period, there were some small Inns that were the first type of commercial enterprise within Hospitality industry, this has been the first catering service in the field of hospitality where customers pay for different service while staying in the Inns. In the early days, the travelers used to stay in a large communal room with limited privacy and the places were rough and simple. All the guests were usually shared the same quarter with their houses and livestock. As time went on, some luxuries structure of hospitality was gradually introduced for the wealthy travelers with private rooms and toilets. There was little improvement had been made in the inns, the Hoshi Ryokanis - the world’s oldest hotel, it is located in Komatsu, Japan. The hotel and spa have been owned by the same family since 1300 years ago.…
