Families may have a variety of needs, in which they need professional support. Families with a large number of children may not have the required amount of living space, this could mean that children are sharing beds, or parents are not sleeping in a room. Children will lack of sleep are proven to concentrate less and develop slower. Families that are suffering with poverty may not be able to afford a house or afford to pay the bills. This is where the family will gain financial support such as housing benefits, their council tax will be paid for them leaving them to pay for water, gas and electricity. Sometimes this help still isn’t enough so families go without heating or hot water meaning they aren’t meeting their basic care needs. Within the community there will be many areas that will offer families in this situation help. They include, sure start centres, food banks, the church and other families. Families in this situation benefit from living in an inclusive community, where the area is safe and free of crime, be it anti-social behaviour of elders or racial harassment. Most areas have community support officers that the children will get introduced to in school or when out on the streets playing. If a family is new to the area and are of a different culture they may struggle to gain help, due to harassment, or lack of communication, be it language problems, or no phone. Money seems to be the main cause of most of the needs that require help.…

According to studies from the USA, nearly 80% of the persons committing child abuse are the custodial parents (and the biological parents in 90% of all such cases), and 6.6% are relatives. The same studies concluded that 56.5% of the abusers are women and 42.4% are men, while 75% of all abusers are under 40 years old (Jacobi G ; Dettmeyer R ; Banaschak S ; Brosig B ; Herrmann B 2010). The suspicion of child abuse may arise because of the pattern of injury that is found, e.g. an injury at a site where blows are typically struck or with a typical appearance, such as parallel stripes. Aside from this, a number of circumstances of other types can indicate the likelihood of child abuse. A child that has been injured through abuse is often not taken to the doctor immediately, but only after a delay (Jacobi et al 2010).The history of the event as recounted to the doctor is inconsistent with the type of injury seen, the symptoms and signs, and/or…

The main struggle they all face is their financial situation. Besides the leaky roof, they rarely have money for food. Yunior speaks of almost always eating boiled yucca, platano and guineo. They didn’t get meat or beans and only occasionally would they get cheese or bacalao (codfish). Only on the best days can Mami afford oil to fry the food. They only way they could get their medicine on sick days was to skimp on the little bit of dinner they had. Obviously, they couldn’t afford clothes for school and Mami had to make sandals for Yunior and Rafa by sewing paper together. The leaky house was in a neighborhood that was “not the safest of places”, the kind of neighborhood where you can have a rat infestation with dozens of them running around. Sometimes when things are really bad, Mami has to send the kids away to relatives. Only the people living in campos or the Haitian immigrants were poorer.…
