Horrible Hormones
The Horrible Hormones I live on a small farm at the top of a mountain. At the bottom of the long gravel driveway is a two story tan house with a red door and shutters. Behind the house is the barn. The barn is a baby blue, two stall barn where the horses stay and where we store hay for our animals. There are two fairly large pastures connected to the barn that the animals can graze on. If you walk past the barn to the wood line you will find a small hutch with a handful of pigs. Just past the pigs is a small shed. In the shed you can find hens roosting in their laying boxes or roaming the yard eating grass and bugs they find. Across the driveway from the house is a large field that is pastured into two fields. In one of those fields, during certain times of the year, you can find a steer grazing. My family raises our own animals for slaughter for ourselves. We raise beef, swine, and chickens. All of the animals we raise are raised without the use of extra hormones. I know from experience that animals that are raised without hormone additives taste better than animals that were grown with them. Animals that were given growth hormones are often more bland and less flavorful and the meat is more stringy and less tender. When you use growth hormones you pay less on feed because the animal grows very quickly; however, you have to pay for the different hormones and steroids that you are giving the animal. Another reason my family won’t use hormones is they often cause complications for the animal. For example, a growth hormone for pigs, paylean, often causes the joints to stiffen and the pig to lose some of its fluid mobility because the meat is growing faster than the skeleton of the pig is.
The use of growth hormones in meat and milk production has become a huge controversy. The main reason producers use growth hormones is to boost production and make more money faster. There are two types of steroids; natural and synthetic. Natural hormones are hormones that

Human growth hormone, HGH, is produced in the anterior pituitary gland and promotes growth in humans. The effect on the performer is therefore thought to be an increase in muscle mass and strength. This is positive for an endurance athlete because if their muscles are bigger and stronger they should be able to work for longer and not fatigue as easily. The risks of HGH are that hypertrophy of internal organs could also take place as the growth is not limited to a…

It has been two weeks after the transition from Animal Farm to Manor Farm and it was the middle of the night, the farm was dead silent. Animals snuck out of the farm into the a hole in the fence, one by one...…

According to Charlotte P. Brennand, Bovine Somatotropin (BST) is a hormone produced in the pituitary gland of the cow. The simple yet concrete diction that Carson uses increases her confidence in the pesticide's universality and capability to harm much of wildlife, to evoke sympathy for wildlife caught in the pesticide's net. Carson asserts that animals, especially birds, are now "finding themselves a direct target" of pesticides. The assertion that they are not "direct[ly]" targeted emphasizes the statement that farmers are now purposely trying to kill and "eradicate" these animals. She portrays wildlife as the goal that many farmers try to get rid of, in order to generate a feeling of sympathy toward those numerous animals now strongly aimed at, illustrating the widespread effects of pesticide use. Carson presents the conditions of several animals, such as the "rabbits or raccoons or opossums," which used to occupy a home in the lands near the river, are now "doomed." By mentioning these specific animals, which are usually thought of as cute and harmless, Carson highlights the innocence of wildlife in the area. The sudden transition from describing the innocence of the animals to the ominous future reveals…

Steroids come in a variety of way to be consumed: injected, swallowed, and snorted. These steroids build muscle to help one perform. Main steroids are HGH (Human Growth Hormone), anabolic steroids. All makes will make one stronger, all can end ones career. “Anabolic- androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone” (Wadler). That’s just a nice way of saying anabolic-androgenic steroids make one stronger using fake hormones. Anabolic steroids are the most effective and have the worst long term affects. Anabolic steroids are so effective that they are prescribed by doctors to treat “malnutrition, growth disorders, and testosterone deficiency”(Wadler) Although most of these short term affects sound good, the long term seem to throw a juicy curve-ball back at you. Anne Marie Brooks, a writer for a weekly health magazine, states: “Muscles grow so rapidly that tendon or ligament damage results during physical activity. Instead of better performance, the user may face weeks or months on crutches, in a brace, in pain. “Ouch! That sounds like the negatives over rule the positives (of steroids) and anabolic steroids don’t sound so good after all. HGH which is a safer alternative of steroids is also used by a lot of athletes. “Human Growth Hormone is produced by the…

Performance enhancing drugs such as testosterone (the main male hormone), drive muscle growth (Egendorf 15). Anabolic steroids were developed in the late 1930s to treat hypogonadism. Hypogonadism is a condition where the testes don’t produce enough testosterone to normal growth, development, and sexual functioning (Kiesbye 15). Russian weight lifters in the 1954 world weight competition introduced anabolic steroids to international athletic competition when they found that they could use them for a competitive…

First, let’s define the term hormone. Hormones are chemicals that are produced naturally by our bodies and in the bodies of animals. They are released into our blood by the organs that produce them and they travel to different parts of the body. They affect body functions such as growth, development and reproduction. So how are these hormones beneficial to food producers? Well, they improve the meat quality, increase feed efficiency, reduce costs for producers, increase slaughter time and increase animal growth cycles; to name a few. Let’s take a closer look at the specific hormones used in this industry. Estradiol, in the human body, is a form of estrogen, a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries. Estradiol is used to treat symptoms of menopause, prevention of osteoporosis, replacement of estrogen in women with ovarian failure and sometimes used as a cancer treatment. Progesterone is used to cause menstrual periods in women. It is also used to prevent overgrowth in the lining of the uterus. Testosterone is a sex hormone that is produced in male testicles. It is used to treat conditions in males such as delayed puberty, impotence, or other hormonal imbalances. Is…

So we continued down this road hoping we’d spot a raccoon running in the ditch alongside a corn field when all of a sudden a badger came out. We swerved and missed him but that badger was mad. He tried to chase our pickup down but we went to fast for him. After the badger we decided to go on a different road somewhere out in the middle of nowhere where nobody lived and had no livestock we could hurt.…

Should one be banned from their team if they are caught using human growth hormones? In the past, players have gotten suspended, penalized, and fined after using the HGH. Players use these drugs to enhance the way they play their game. These drugs are harmful to the human body, and numerous doctors and physicians do not suggest the use of them. Also, the usage of HGH is considered cheating in almost every sport. Athletes are particularly blinded by the short term effects of these drugs, such as, acne, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. They think it will enhance the talent they already possess, and some of these athletes do get away with using them. The long term effects of these drugs overweigh the “benefits” of the drugs. Therefore, these players who use HGH should not be let off when they are caught.…

Hormones play an important role in bodily functions of the living human as well as mental functions that allow us to create, write, act, or in general be productive humans. When any of our hormones or the glands that produce them are not in sync or producing properly, we may not be able to think at all, or we may be so emotionally dysfunctional that we become nonproductive. Thus hormones may have a tremendous effect on our human behavior. Our endocrine system is made up of many glands that secrete chemicals directly into our bloodstream or lymph system. These chemical are called hormones, which are carried through the body, having an effect both on internal activities and visible behavior (Coon, Mitterer, 2012). Hormones are like transmitters, activating other cells in the body.…
