Horatio Nelson's Accomplishments
Horatio Nelson at a young age had a love for the sea and with help from his family, mainly his father, he was able to start his naval career on his Uncle Maurice Suckling’s ship the HMS Raisonnable. He started as an ordinary seaman which is one who has one to two years of experience at sea and later was able to be a coxswain, one who steers and guides the ship, until he was promoted into a midshipman which would give him training on how he could improve his skills so he could one day be a higher ranking officer. Throughout the years he gained more and more experience from being transferred other ships, to sailing to the artic to find the Northwest Passage, and even escorting convoys. While on his voyage a war broke out and his ship along with others were sent to support the East India Company. It was in this timespan he experienced his first sense battle, it was an exchange of fire from a ship while in the waters of the Indian Ocean. After experiencing the climate and waters of India for two years Horatio had contracted Malaria and was sent home. After returning home after his six month voyage he was ready to return to the seas. Not long after arriving home he received orders to be a Lieutenant of the Worcester in the Royal Navy. He led them through the tropical riverbed to an outpost of the fort which was about 60 miles up the river but the actual fort was 100 miles up the river. He personally led the attack on the outpost and the defenders were surprised and they were easily taken over. However at this time he was ordered to go back to the ship and could not assist in taking the fort. Even then he fell ill and couldn’t take command of the ship and was sent to Jamaica where he was taken care of but was eventually taken home. After he regained his strength his next assignment was to command an important convoy of ships on route to the Baltics. When he returned he asked to go back to the West Indies and although they granted his request by the time he returned Great Britain had made peace with America and Spain. After the war during the time of peace it was difficult for him to get a ship Horatio had gotten married and for five years he lived

    The Battle at Fort McKinley was the first major stand against the British attacks. Before the battle would begin an order is placed for the largest American flags yet to be made. One flag is raised shortly before bombardment of the fort began form the British naval fleet.
