Hope VI
The Hope VI was developed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 1992. The main goal for this policy was to redevelop severely distressed subside housing programs into mixed income areas and non-poverty areas as well. The HOPE VI program stands for “Homeownership Opportunities for People Everywhere.” The governments main idea for this policy was to promote New Urbanism and end discrimination in the poor neighborhoods. New Urbanism is what makes communities more pedestrian friendly and provides a widespread of job offers and housing. With this issue being in affect, families are impacted by many ways. For example the benefits that come with Hope VI are improved housing quality, safer environment, better school system, improvement in mental and physical health, employment and etc. With housing quality being in affect, families will be able to live in a much updated environment. Many mold and led paint problems are found in old buildings and they wont experience frequent malfunctions that also come with living in an old building. Infestation with rats and roaches will be illuminated as well if the new Hope VI housing it kept up with. Families will be impacted by being placed in a safer environment which means it will be in mixed income areas. Children won’t be exposed to violence and less gang activity. According to a study funded by the Substance Abuse Treat Prevention Policy, there is a high rate with children suffering from substance and a high chance of getting HIV in low income urban areas.
