Honor In The Iliad
Honor can be defined by being regarded with great respect because of actions one is making or has made. People can have honor in many different things such as family, their religion or the country in which they live. Honor differs from culture to culture, the people in those cultures have different definitions of honor opposed to 21st century Americans. The definition has also changed over time, people acting in the name of honor have changed this world’s path, either for the better or the worse. To begin, honor’s definition and traditions have drastically changed over the course of history. A hero, in literature is one who possesses honor or honorable qualities, honor is the actual qualities such as nobility, integrity and bravery. “Last month, on 11/12/15 a retired army captain, Capt. Florent Globerg, was given a Medal of Honor for saving the lives of his fellow soldiers from two different Afghan suicide bombers. He was very badly injured in these deadly attacks and needed 33 surgeries to keep his leg. He received a Medal of Honor for, “his selfless acts” said President Barack Obama during his speech at Capt. Globerg’s ceremony” (CNN). The Medal of Honor is the highest US military decoration, awarded by Congress to a member of the armed forces for gallantry and bravery in combat at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty (CMOHS). The Medal of Honor is a truly coveted decoration desired by many but few have the bravery in the face of danger to earn it. Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa who brought down the apartheid in 1993, said during his speech for receiving the Nobel Prize concerning courage,”I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” This quote is dealing with a fundamental cornerstone of honor which is the willingness to rise to any occasion, bravery.
