Not everyone can boast an amazing GPA, a scroll of extracurricular activities, and top marks on their standardized tests. That doesn’t mean you’re at a disadvantage when it comes to applying for – and winning – scholarships. It only means you have to be a little more creative.

If you’re a good writer who is able to come up with essays on a variety of topics, a scholarship essay contest could be a natural option for you. While some scholarship essay contests will still ask you to describe those qualities mentioned above as part of the application process, even if they’re not weighted heavily among the judges of that award, many more only ask that you produce a thoughtful, well-crafted essay based on a topic of that scholarship provider’s choice. Some will ask you to get political, some will challenge you to come up with workable solutions to problems facing the country, and some will ask you to describe your passion for a particular field of study or potential career. Luckily for you, even if you’re struggling to get going on a topic, we have a number of resources to help you come up with a winning, effective scholarship essay.

We’ve come up with a list of scholarship essay contests below. They’re not necessarily targeting the average" student, and will require some work on your part as you come up with that winning essay. But they could feel all the more rewarding once you land one to help you fund that college education, because you put in that added effort. For more examples of scholarship essay contests and awards based on other criteria and interests, conduct a free scholarship search.

The reason I believe I should be considered for this scholarship is because I am a very hard worker. I take direction very well , and I want to make something out of my life by furthering my education. My academic plans are to keep attending San Joaquin Delta College , to complete my general education requirements , and transfer to a 4-year college and major in communication and minor in music. One day I would love too become a newscaster . Ever since I was a little boy I dreamt of it ! (Lights , Camera, Action, Reporting The News In Stockton ). Through life I’ve dealt with many problems , but I have never let that stop me , for example I auditioned for American Idol and made it to the third round, but had got cut, I thought my career as a singer was over, but I just kept motivating myself and ended up in this new musical called Damaged.…

Specifically, I played clarinet in the Concert and Symphonic bands and I played in the marching band. As such we marched in parades all across the west coast and were by far the loudest in cheering on the Roughriders at our football games. Additionally, in high school, I took part in Model United Nations and went to several conferences and discussed a wide variety of topics ranging from the International Drug Trade to Piracy. I also took part, in the summer of my Junior year, in the National Student Leadership Conference for International Diplomacy in Washington D.C. At this Conference, I attended classes, took part in a variety of simulations, attended leadership courses, visited historic landmarks and listened to lectures from a variety of organizations ranging from the Peace Corps to Monsanto. In summary, throughout my High School career and now in my College years I am an active participant on campus because I believe in learning and experiencing as much as possible when given the opportunity and being awarded this scholarship would help further my passion for…

Growing up communication always proved challenging for me, writing seemed exceptionally difficult. Including detail and clarity into topics I felt passionate about always flowed naturally, I could write forever describing the patience learned working for hours with a brown horse in a round pen, the dedication I learned every time I got bucked off, or the listening skills I developed when something did not seem to be working correctly. However, when it comes to information that fails to captivate my interest I struggle to include ways to fascinate my readers. Scholarships present a wonderful opportunity to practice various topics, different thoughts, and distinct styles. Refusing to refine upon a set of skills leaves opportunities unavailable,…

Figuring out how to pay for one’s college tuition is probably one of the most stressful processes a person will face in his or her life. Many parents save money over the course of a child’s life to help pay for college, but this money is very rarely enough to cover the outrageous cost of a higher education. This is where scholarships come into play. But how should schools choose which students to award scholarships too? There have been many debates about whether a more money should be allotted to need-based scholarships or merit-based scholarships. Merit-based is obviously the best way to go.…
