Homework Harmful Or Helpful
Homework – Harmful or Helpful?

By Ben Voyvodic

“No more homework.” Sounds like a mad chant from Year 12 students on muck-up day, but it could be the future of Australian education. There is a strong view from field experts saying that homework ruins family time, contributes to obese children and has little educational value. Finland was the first country to stop homework, and is producing some of the world’s best results in science while other countries like France and Singapore are preparing to follow in their footsteps. Lets face it - no-one likes homework. It makes students stressed, ruins family time for parents and teachers waste time marking homework when they could be planning brilliant lessons for students. So why is Australia continuing to stay behind in education when they could join a group of no-homework countries leading the world in global test scores?

Homework stops kids from being kids. Kids are stopped from having fun as they waste away at their desks stressing maniacally about homework. A recent survey found that parents think that their children have “ too much” homework and what they are given is “too difficult” leading to nearly a quarter (23%) of parents completing homework with absolutely no input from their child. This is a ridiculous statistic. Not only is homework taking up kid’s time, but it is wasting their parents’ time too. Children need to spend time with family. Alfie Kohn, author of The Homework Myth, agree with this; “Homework is frequently the source of frustration, exhaustion, family conflicts and a lack of time for kids to pursue other interests. It may be the greatest single extinguisher of children 's curiosity.”

Australians need a good education. We are a small country and therefore need intelligent, informed and cultured people to keep up with Asian countries leading the world in science and math. Finland is the only countries that keeps close to countries like China, Singapore and Korea dominating the world in

Imagine a world where students come home from school and take the time to unwind and relax. It has been proven that almost three quarters of Canadian parents think that homework is a household stress. So why is homework still being assigned at schools, especially for younger grades? In recent years, the question of whether or not homework should be banned from elementary schools and limited to one hour per weekday in high school has been widely discussed. According to a Stanford Researcher, too much homework can negatively children. It takes their lives away from school, where family, friends, and social activities matter (Parker). Some students don’t know what to do when the teacher assign their homework. They don’t know what to do because when the teachers assign them homework the night before to do, they spent all night doing it. Then the next day at school they are way too tired to process any work and lesson the teachers are teaching. They would just fall asleep and pay less attention. That causes the student to not know what to do and they just write down random answers. Then when they turn it in the teachers mark it wrong and give them a bad grade. Eventually with all these bad grades in their file it will bring their grades down a lot. This would just give more stress to the students and drain their energy. An average person should be getting about seven to eight hours of sleep a night not two or three…

Parents are meant to help children with many different issues that arise. However, when it comes to homework, should parents intervene? This controversial topic is a huge debate among teachers nationwide. Parents should not get too involved in their children's homework because it makes it difficult for teachers to access the students’ understanding of the concept taught, the student will most likely lose the responsibility to do their own homework then later start to depend only on their parents, and although some may argue that if parents get involved it will show the child that school is important, students need to realize their parents will not always be present to encourage them.…

One of the many pressures a college student faces is the amount of homework we endure. At Southern Nazarene University, we have different classes each day. Having a different class every day comes with a lot of homework. Homework is the cause of decreasing grades. In college you are overwhelmed with homework. There are two different types of opinions when it comes to the term “homework.” One of these opinions is that too much homework causes students to disengage. Others, however, claim that homework is necessary and helpful. As a result of all this homework, college students are forced to stay up late hours, which leads me to my next point of maintaining sleep.…

Since Roberto Nevilis introduced it to the world as a punishment in 1905, there have been many arguments to whether or not homework should be required. What initially started as punishment for kids who messed around in class has become a mandatory task that all students are required to do daily. I’m here to end that, I intend to show you that students should not be required to complete homework for a grade. Homework consumes too much time and leaves no space for extracurricular activities and causes health problems. On top of that, many students don’t even have the resources required to complete the homework. Despite these things, homework is still a graded assignment that if failed to complete, can drastically bring down a student's grade.…

They don’t have time to do a lot of homework. There are team sports, music lessons, religious activities, and other activities. Many parents feel like it’s their job to help their kids if they need help finishing their homework. You might say that “yes, kids may be busy, but part of growing up is learning to balance extracurricular activities with the demands of schoolwork” (scope magazine, pages 20- 21, lines 64-67), but if kids are so busy that they can barely even spare enough time to eat dinner, how are they going to have time for an hour and a half of homework? Parents can help the kids finish their homework faster without giving away the answer.…

Many parents, teachers, and students argue over whether homework is good for students or bad thing to keep and whether it should remain as an everyday assessment given to students. A CNN reporter said “The data shows that homework over this level is not only not beneficial to children’s grades or GPA, but there is really a plethora of evidence that it is detrimental to their attitude about school, their grades, their self-confidence, their social skills, and their quality of life” (Levy). Homework should not be given to tots because homework causes problems at school, at home, and in their health.…

But does homework have any sort of impact, negative or positive for students ages four through eight? “For elementary students, no amount of homework -large or small- affects achievement (Cooper 88). This means that children are often given homework assignments that have no value at all. On average my son receives 6-8 different types of homework sheets. I’ve mentioned before, homework makes my son uncomfortable. Looking at the homework closely I concluded that four of the sheets had minimum correlation to what the study plan was in school. No wonder my 1st grade child is confused and nervous when it comes to homework hour. It is obvious to me that children at a younger age are not capable of completing homework because they simply don’t understand. Keep in mind that not all homes are created equal and not all parents have the luxury to help their child in detail when they get stuck with their home assignments, obviously all children come from different backgrounds and it would only be fair if homework was looked at a little closer in a equally matter for all young…
