Homework filled holiday
Why do teachers assign homework to students during holidays? Is it because that the teachers feel that students are supposed to have more time to do homework as they do not have to attend school? I feel that homework are assigned to students so that they will not lose touch with the subject when school reopens. As some students take up to 10 subjects, their homework load is sure heavy. Although students do not have to attend classes during holidays, most of them prefer not to have holidays as their holidays are spent on co-curricular activity (CCA), extra classes, projects and homework.

During holidays, students often have to return school for more than twice per week just to attend extra classes, especially the graduating cohort, and most of the time is due to the teachers being unable to cover the required syllabus for examinations. If it is only some classes that need extra lessons, it is understandable, but if the whole cohort is unable to complete the syllabus, something is wrong. As many teachers or different subjects are unable to finish teaching the required syllabus, seems that the syllabus required is too heavy.

Many parents are complaining about their children having to return school many times per week during holidays and they are always blaming the teachers for it. But, spare a thought of the teachers too, they too have to sacrifice their holiday to the benefits of the students, spending lesser time with their family members. Students often benefit from the extra classes, however the teachers gain nothing from the classes, they only get excuses from students from not attending the classes and receive complaints from parents.

If four day weeks were introduced to schools, the students and schools will both benefit. The schools will save a significant amount of money and students will excel academically and behavior will improve drastically. Whenever we have a student/teacher holiday, less students are absent and behave because they are looking forward to less days of the week. When students have less days to worry about, it will make them work harder so they can finish of the week sooner.…

All year school ends up costing the school district and surrounding community more money than a traditional nine month schedule. 'More funds would be needed to cover the costs of paying the teachers and staff for one full year instead of for 180 days work. ' ( Sevetson 2). 'Teachers currently make an average of $37, 000 in the United States. However, the costs would increase to $53, 000 to keep the teachers for a full year. ' (Somerby 8). Currently, a district uses a lot of its budget on paying teachers. Once the increased costs are put in place, the budget depletes rapidly. Yet teachers must be paid, as they are the cornerstone of education. Also, it takes additional funds to run the school all year, due to things such as air conditioning in the summer (White 28). Many schools due not currently need AC systems to be used. However, AC is a costly amenity and if schools are held open three additional months, AC becomes a heavy factor. Not to mention, the level of supplies and paper that is consumed would be more than 33% larger (Sardo- Brown 26). Costs per school for items, such as paper, increase due to constant use. (White 29). Students would be deprived of such simple items such as worksheets or class handouts. Outside costs, such as transportation and equipment for activities would go up for constant maintenance (Sardo Brown 27). Buses that travel every school day use…

Why were schools traditionally set up to give students the summer off? When schools started mostly all of students came from a farming family, and they needed to be out of school to help on the farm. Many people know that there are not as many students coming from farming families today, so why do most schools still operate on this schedule? While some parents believe that year-round schooling decreases family time and causes student burn out, in reality frequent breaks provided by year-round schooling revamp students’ interest, help prevent loss of learning especially in low income students, and provide many family benefits.…

Many parents use summer activities as childcare while they are working. Such as summer camps. But when the students are out on break when these camps are not in session, parents would be forced to find other child care at a costly price (“Year Round Schools Pros and Cons”). Year round schooling could also interfere with these camps. So students would not be able to attend camps such as boy scouts, girl scouts, and enrichment camps that they may use in their future lives because they would be in school. Another problem is that parents and families reject the year-round schooling and the schools lose the cooperation of the families. Year round schooling also makes it difficult to plan summer vacations or even to find family time. The students must constantly be worrying about homework after school and also want to hang out with friends. This causes them to spend less and less time with their parents and siblings. This family time is very important for the student and the families health. Students need the support and guidance of their family to stay on the right track and do the right things. Lots of family time comes during summer break. When the students don’t have to worry about homework and can hang out with their friends during the day and then spend time with their families at night ("Year-Round School Pros and Cons."). If we take away this summer break students and family would not be spending enough quality family time together without missing school and this is not good for their well-being or their…

Education is the fundamental key to our everyday lives. Knowledge is what keeps our economic growth possible. We are all taught, since childhood, that learning is a way to empower one's self, which is why our school systems are an important part of our society. Recently, a debate has emerged as whether the year round calender is better for our students than our current ten month calender year. While three thousand other schools may have had their districts change their school systems to work year round, we must not do the same. A year round school system would do little more than frustrate us and our parents while costing the school board more. A year round system would limit our vacataions, our ability to hold summer jobs, and would put us…
