Homestay Tourism Case Study
Homestay provides pure travel experience and is directly linked to the local community. Homestay program has been able to maintain the social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability that enhances rural community development. It is the social bonding among the local community people with determined minds, skills, knowledge and hardworking hands that has led to the successful implementation of the homestay program in rural communities, hence, uplifting the rural economy of the local people.
The homestay regulation has emphasized to encourage the micro-economic sector in the rural areas; preserve the ecological sustainability; generate self-employment and economic growth in the rural communities. By living with host families, students can observe and participate in a wide range of everyday practices while highly upgrading their language proficiency and intercultural awareness. This has helped students live in a homely environment while they are far away from their homeland. However, the major challenge of the homestay tourism is its sustainability. Homestay programme has been facing generation gap problem. Most of the homestays so far have been carried out either by the women’s groups or the old generation while young generation are either migrating to cities or foreign lands for better education and employment.
