Homer Hickam And The Rocket Boys
In the movie, Homer Hickam and his Rocket boys’ worked together to achieve great things. They all used the habit #6, Synergize to do this. For example,Homer worked with “Miss Riley” to get a better understanding of rocket science and the math that is put into it. Miss Riley helped the boys get into the science fair as well, so the boys dedicated a rocket to her. If it weren’t for Miss Riley the boys probably wouldn’t have gotten so far with the rocket science as to winning the science fair. Jim Turin & Sons Inc. (“the taxpayer”) have been using the cash method to report income for the company. The cash method recognizes income once payment has been received. It also includes deducting the cost of asphalt. By not claiming the asphalt as inventory the taxpayer can recognize their income as it comes in instead of when the job is completed. “The Commissioner determined that asphalt was “merchandise,” under Treas. Reg.S. 1.471-1, such that taxpayer had inventories and thus was required to use the accrual method of amounting.” (Jim Turin & Sons Inc.). Since Jim Turin & Sons Inc. don’t report the asphalt as inventory they are able to use the cash method they followed all the guidelines…

In October Sky, the beginning of the space age is announced with the Sputnik Satellite is launched. She asks a student what he thinks of the subject, Homer Hickam had no answer. It was not until he witnesses Sputnik with his own eyes that had began to have an interest in rockets and space. Thus this began the journey that would get him and his friends into college. The “Rocket Boys” set off to build a working rocket, one that would go up high in the air. As life would have it the “Rocket Boys” did not go without hardship. In their journey the first rocket, AUK I, blows up a section of the Hickam home fence. They get right back to work on AUK I with the help of a company worker they have a functioning rocket. The boys go to launch it from a hill top near the mine and unknowingly the rocket heads straight toward the mines. Landing in front of Hickam’s father’s office Homer and the boys are faced with their first setback. Hickam’s father lets him know, “Don’t you ever let me catch you with these fool things on company property again,” which meant they would have to get about eight miles out of Coalwood, West Virginia. This gets O’Dell and Roy Lee to doubt in themselves because they cannot see a future where they win a science fair. “A million to one, O’Dell,” are the chances that a bunch of kids from Coalwood actually winning the National Science Fair (October…

The “Reunion” is the shortest yet most powerful reading by far. In my own opinion, the biggest thing we as humans waste is sweet, sweet time. It is taken way too much for granted, and it seems that we only appreciate it when we’ve realized we’ve run out of it. The people you take for granted today may turn out to be the only ones you need tomorrow. As spoken in the lyrics of the Maccabees, “let’s make time work for us”, “because time can mean so much” (Maccabees).…

When the aliens came, everyone expected them to be aggressive and take over the planet, but they did not. These aliens are portrayed in Floyd Looney’s “When the Tardigrades Came…” These aliens instead of taking over the planet, did the opposite, they adopted the culture of humans. It took some time for both sides to get more used to each other, but not all the culture of the aliens was lost. This bit of culture not lost, was kept secret from the humans, and when the humans found out, there was an outrage. The difference between the aliens and humans is shown in the cultural differences between them, and the alien’s resistance to fully adopt the culture of humans affects the human’s opinion of them.…

My father-in-law, Robert E. Brown, a prolific storyteller, grew up in Bradley, South Dakota, a railroad town servicing the surrounding farming community on the eastern Dakota prairie. Although his childhood encompassed the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl eras, his anecdotes didn’t dwell on the hardships. Rather, he recalled and passed on fond memories of these years. Several of his stories recounted events regarding mischievous activities carried out by the males from Bradley. Boys will be boys.…

The characteristics of a capable leader vary drastically from person to person. For example if Franklin D. Roosevelt and Genghis Khan were compared to one another there’d be some pretty stark differences in the way the led, FDR led the American people through the great depression with a hard working and open minded agenda, whereas Genghis transformed Mongolia into one of the largest empires in history through organising a massive horde of horsemen which he wielded against the defenseless villagers of Eurasia, both arguably great leaders just went at it differently. This is true of all leaders, including those featured in “The Flying Machine” “Leiningen versus the ants” and “Where have you gone charming Billy”. Of the three characters featured in leadership roles or roles of power in these stories, The Emperor from “The Flying Machine” exhibits the…

Rowing is a team sport, and requires a fully devoted team to succeed, as well as academics at Belmont Hill. One thing that sets Belmont Hill far apart from any other school is its goal to make the campus a happy and comfortable place for all of its students. They understand that not everyone is a professional at every subject, and help arrange for tutors to help you progress through challenging material. This concept is also present in the book The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. This is similar to rowing and how Joe keeps his team positive and ready to race. One of the most important parts is keeping everyone “on the same note” and keeping consistent strokes in order to flawlessly propel their shell. Another example of teamwork is when the team qualifies for the olympics, but can’t afford to travel to Germany. As a team, they raise money and soon meet their goal. As Joe Rantz progressed into his life as a young adult, he learned to trust his teammates, was devoted to doing what was…

Jim Anderson and his parents Harold and Mrs. Anderson recently moved to Kendal from Savanna La Mar where his father worked as a mechanic. It was during the Christmas vacation that he met three boys in this new Village: Mule, Mongoose and Milo who were spinning tops for fun. The boys laughed at Jim’s feet because unlike them, Jim wore shoes. While Jim was telling the boys of his hobbies like helping the mechanics (such as his father), going swimming and helping the fishermen row in their canoes, the boy who appeared to be the leader, Milo, was getting jealous. A while after Jim had introduced himself to the boys he asked to join their secret club and was tricked into giving them all 15 of his marbles without being allowed to join the club. The boys who though that it was impossible, gave Jim a test to catch a hawk alive in order to join the club.…
