Homelessness In Today's Society
Intro
They are on the streets, at bus stops, they are everywhere. And being that there is over 3.5 million of them each year there is no hesitation that you’ve guessed it. I’m talking about our homeless. Homelessness is an increasing issue in Today’s society. The number of homelessness is growing at a startling rate. And more and more individuals are facing homelessness every day. We all have our own opinions, and statements regarding the homeless be it “avoiding eye contact, to just keep walking, or just ignore them.” and that makes us think that they will all just go away. Over 1 million of these are children, and on any given night over 300,000 children are homeless. Poverty is the main factor in homelessness, and the first of which is work related. Loosing a job can be like a domino effect on ones social order. According to a survey released by bankrate.com, over 76% of Americans are living paycheck-to paycheck with little to no emergency savings. Health care is also another contributing cause of poverty which leads to homelessness. According to HomeAid.org homelessness is caused from serious illnesses, or disabilities being mental or physical. These things can start a bottom ward spiral to homelessness. And considering that 1/3 of every person living in poverty has no health insurance of any kind. Things like one bad break, or one illness can send a family or person down the road to homelessness. Personal Problems, is the second cause of homelessness in the United States, for example, Domestic Violence, Addictions, and Mental Illnesses are just a few of the many personal problems that can lead to homelessness. Homelessness affects public safety, it affects government programs that are funded by tax dollars which are intended to assist the homeless. Homelessness affects everybody living in a community. Community residents, Community service workers, and homeless individuals themselves deal with the devastating impacts of the homelessness on the health and the vitality of individuals and communities. Communities are affected by homelessness in a variety of ways: First being Moral Dimension. People are morally affected by homelessness. Some of us justify our inaction by just claiming that “they brought it on themselves” or “people choose to be homeless” without fully understanding the issues that have come through to the current crisis. The second is Social cohesion, in which large inequities exist in the discussion of resources, income, which is unhealthy for all members of a community. Inequality is associated with the breakdown of social cohesion which has led to increased fear and uncertainty for individuals. Strong and healthy communities are communities in which all members can share opportunity and wealth. And finally, being social harmony. Growing homelessness creates a division within the community as an “us vs them” mentality. If a family is left homeless due to a house fire, flood, or other sudden tragedy, communities will
