Company Q’s attitude towards social responsibility appears to be nonexistent, possibly through ignorance or disconcert. Either way the lack of social responsibility affects their business and community’s perception of their business. It appears that the company management has never developed and ethics program that clearly defines the corporate culture including provisions for social responsibility. Profits, or at least a lack of losses appears to be a primary motivating factor for company Q's management’s decisions. Company Q has been attempting to cut losses by closing stores that were losing money instead of finding innovative ways to increase revenues and profitability for the stores. Based on the known information, Company Q still has ample opportunity to build a socially responsible reputation within the community it serves and at the same time create profits for its shareholders. Simple and cost-effective changes could be implemented in a relatively short amount of time and the benefits to the community, employees and the company itself could be realized within a reasonable amount of time. There are at least three ways that Company Q can make a positive affect within the community that it serves while increasing revenues and profitability for shareholders.…

From the given company information and profile, it seems that Company Q’s current attitude toward social responsibility could be improved. Customers are not only interested in what products and services stores offer, they are also interested in how the companies serve the community. Company Q needs to change a few policies in order to improve their current social standing in the views of their customers. First, closing stores in areas of need is not a customer-friendly policy. Next, offering products customers ask for, but with limited selection and high profit margins is not a customer oriented policy. Finally, refusing to donate day-old products to charity shows a lack of caring for the communities the company serves.…

Keeping this definition in mind while evaluating Company Q’s attitude toward social responsibility, it is apparent they have developed a reputation for not caring about the community by closing stores in higher crime rate areas, only offering a limited supply of healthconscience and organic products, and denying food bank donations. Company Q cares more about the bottom line and has forgotten the things that contribute to an organization’s long term success. I believe that by addressing these three issues Company Q can change the community’s negative perception of them. The first area that could be improved regarding Company Q’s attitude toward social responsibility is the act of closing stores in high crime areas. The decision to do this was based solely on the losses the company seemed to be taking in those locations without consideration for the negative effects on the customers, employees, and the community as a whole. The customers are losing a convenient place to shop, the employees are losing their jobs in an area where jobs are limited, and the building will stand empty inviting more crime. All of these things negatively affect the community and give the impression that Company Q does not care about the people supporting their business. The organization should look at developing and implementing a loss prevention program with officers in charge of overseeing the training of employees. Teaching workers what to look for and how to react to possible shoplifting can greatly reduce shrink in an organization. This program also…

However, what makes the issue particularly topical is the growing number of pressures on companies to manage and protect corporate reputation as a resource, partly by investing in social initiatives. These pressure points include: customers, suppliers, employees, managers themselves, shareholders, media, and external lobby groups. Importantly, the debate has moved beyond pressures to make charitable donations into the challenge to companies to (a) make good damage they have done at various points in the value chain, without waiting for legal coercion to be applied; and, (b) incorporate social initiatives and goals within the core value proposition. Currently, attention is focused on environmental issues and the employment conditions of those who work in manufacturing and distributive organizations in the value chain.…
