Home Abuse Case Study
This is my report on the abuse that occurred in winter Bourne view care home at Hambrooke, south Gloucestershire in England. It’s about the 11 defendants that admitted 38 charges of either neglect or ill treatment of five people with severe learning difficulties after being filmed secretly by a reporter for the BCCs panorama programme. It was operated by castle beck. The home opened in 2006 and by 2010 it had a turnover of £3.7m as the average weekly fee for a patient was £3.500.

In the panorama it showed one support care worker called Wayne Rogers saying to a resident “do you want me to get a cheese grater and grate your face off? Do you want me to turn you into a giant pepperoni?” this sort of discrimination against the resident is verbal abuse as although Wayne was not hurting her physically he was threatening her and hurting her mentally. This would affect the resident intellectually because they have learning difficulties and do not understand terms as easily, they may

This type of discrimination is overt discrimination, meaning that is not hidden and it is obvious and observable. This could affect Simone physically as she is unable to move her body and also the chair pinched her skin on her arm which would lead to a very bad and long lasting, painful bruise. She would become affected intellectually as she would now see a chair as an object that harms and punishes her. Also her emotional side will be affected as she is frequently punished and bullied by Wayne for no particular reason, also she is the only one in the room at the time being hurt and bullied which would upset her lots. Also she would be affected socially as she was unable to socialise effectively being trapped for such a long while in an uncomfortable position. Also when she did speak Wayne responded sarcastically and in a threatening

I watched this documentary this morning with my class on the goings on at Winterbourne View Residential Hospital for adults with Learning Disabilities. I watched as a member of staff made complaints and went to the top to report what was going on in the home and was not taking seriously and ignored and nothing done about his complaints not even an investigation and ended up having to go to the BBC Panorama team. I am ashamed at the fact that the staff member, a senior male nurse called Terry Bryan had to go to people not in the health care industry to talk about what was happening and becoming a whistle-blower in order to help the patients as much as he could.…

No secrets: Guidance on developing and implementing multi-agency policies and procedures to protect vulnerable adults from abuse There can be no secrets and no hiding place when it comes to exposing the abuse of vulnerable adults. The Government’s White Paper, ‘Modernising Social Services’, published at the end of 1998, signalled our intention to provide better protection for individuals needing care and support. This is being taken up through the Care Standards Bill. We are also committed to providing greater protection to victims and witnesses, and the Government is actively implementing the measures proposed in ‘Speaking Up for Justice’, the report on the treatment of vulnerable or intimidated witnesses in the criminal justice system. That report recognised that there were concerns about both the identification and reporting of crime against vulnerable adults in care settings, and endorsed the proposals made by the Association of Directors of Social Services, and others, that a national policy should be developed for the protection of vulnerable adults.…

Firstly if within a hospital a service user was being discriminated against, one of the many possible effects could be depression and self-harm. An example of discrimination within a hospital environment could be that a service user is discriminated about their sexuality, and could be treated different from some staff within the hospital which could lead to that individual self-harming. The effects of self-harm on the service-user could easily lead to depression, which could lead to their health deteriorating even further than it has while they’ve been in hospital recovering. It could potentially make their illness worse than what it was before they were admitted to hospital with all the stress, and the recovery could become non-existent.…

In order to overcome the experiences I had with physical abuse in my life, I must practice how I react towards those who have caused pain on me and to control and strengthen myself emotionally. One step I can take to heal from the destruction caused by physical abuse is practicing how I control my anger. For example, when I’m angry, instead of shouting at someone in a negative way, I should write about the pain I was feeling and why I was angry. This will allow me to reflect back on myself and to lessen my urge to yell. If I yell back furiously, that will cause even more unnecessary destruction. By lessening my urge to yell, I’d be able to communicate with that person in a much more respectful manner and receive the healing that I need. Another…
