Brakes wear over time and with the salt and water on the roads the will wear faster. Changing brake pads and rotors can be done in only a few steps and by doing it yourself you can save yourself money.
The first thing you have to do is lift the car up off the ground and take off the tire so you have access to the bake rotor. Now you are ready to take off the brake caliper. For this you have to take out the bolts or slide pins, depending on what type of brake calipers your car has. While doing this you have to be careful not to drop the caliper, if you do you can break the brake hose and force yourself to do a lot more work. Once it is off you should use safety wire to hang the caliper on the coil spring to prevent stressing the brake hose that is connected the caliper. The next step is to collapse the piston that is in the caliper. First part to do this is to loosen the bleeder screw. This prevents debris from being pushed into the ABS unit; if this happens it will be expensive to fix. Now to collapse the piston leave the brake pad on that comes in contact with the piston and use a c clamp to push the piston back in. The old brake pad prevents the piston from getting damaged. You have to do this because the new brake pads will be thicker than the old ones. Now that the piston is pushed in all the way you can tighten the bleeder screw.
Next you take the brake rotor off of the hub of the vehicle. If your vehicle has a hub centric brake rotor it will slide off at this point. On some vehicles the hub is a part of the brake rotor, if this is the case on you vehicle you have taken the wheel bearings off the vehicle.
