Hockey vs Cricket in India
Hockey the National Sport of India not Cricket

Well, if asked some Indians about what they thought was the National Sport of India his answer would most probably be Cricket. Even though most people will agree but, the truth is the National Sport of India actually is Field Hockey. The thing is actually the hockey team deserves little better treatment and higher praise than cricket. But, do we treat both games equally in India and do we have any special attachment for our national game? Even though Hockey is the national sport of India, and its glorious days, but how Cricket has become the so called national sport of India. Also, we Indians get angry at the slightest insult to our national flag, national anthem; why not care for the national sport then? (“Chak de India-Hockey vs. Cricket."). My intention towards writing this article is not to say that Indians don’t know about their country. Instead my purpose is to refer to the part of population who actually don’t know or care about our nation. I am pretty sure most of the people who read this article are not included in this part of the population.

Hockey has been played in India way before Cricket was, Hockey became India’s national game in 1928 and was played for the first time in the Olympics that year. The Indians won the gold medal without conceding a single defeat in all the matches they played. From then on until 1980 India virtually dominated the sport winning 8 gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the Olympics. Once it trounced USA by margin of 24-1 goals. Such was its glory. 1980’s scripted the decline of Indian hockey, and heralded the rise of Indian cricket as popular sport. In 1983 India won the Cricket World Cup and instantly its charm reverberated throughout the country. It was in this decade that Indians were introduced to Televisions as a large-scale that helped the cause. It is not surprising that hockey’s loss was cricket’s gain.

The reason for this is

Are we really the son/daughter of our mother Earth who gave birth to some great mens like Albert Einstein, Indira Gandhi, Henry Parkes,Dr. Christiaan Barnard, Benazir Bhutto and many more. Due to these men the name of our mother land was taken all over the human society with respect, but what have we done, just opposite of it. Today the number of poor in our country is more than population of happy people. We have the example of example of Singapore, which got independence after India, but today its development condition is far better than India. A wide gap of development can be seen between these two countries. Whatever may be the reason, whether fast rate of growing population or varied culture or anything else, we people just know how to defend our own mistakes and how to get rid of punishment, but not how to make it correct. This has almost become the nature of everyone. We should change our way of thinking. We have confined resources but we should have bound-free imagination. Due to this reason only there is a wide gap between the sports played. When the Indian cricket wins even a simple series, the player gets lakhs of money but when the hockey players wins the Asia Cup, they get only Rs. 25000. Why is it so? Is cricket only game played in India?…

Cricket has become the religion of India and the national anthem of the country, so much so that the word “sports” has become synonymous with cricket. Cricket runs as the life flowing blood through the veins of the multitude. Yes, cricket is the “god of sports” in India. I am not being even the least sarcastic when I say this, but unfortunately this is the sorry state of affairs in our country. Cricket has sounded a death knell to the growth of other sports. Traditional Indian games like hockey, kabaddi, kushti have been demoted to a bygone era. Even international sports like tennis, badminton and football have not been shown any mercy despite us being so “West-crazy”. We hail cricket as the be all and end all of all sports.…

Abstract: The Common Wealth Games 2010 medal tally speaks so many stories that should be heard by everyone and be used to shape the future that is beckoning in the shape of these medals. It is a story of India's youth. CWG success was scripted by India's NEXT Generation. We all saw Saina Nehwal win that last Gold. We cheered her, we cried with her, and we were proud to be in the same country as she is from!! India is seen by the world community as an emerging global power and the third most powerful nation in the world after the US and China. Interestingly, India and China are competing with each other in every field but it is a hard fact that a country with more than billion people is only churning very few world class sportsmen who are capable of winning medal at OLYMPICS. There is no dearth for talent as the shooters, boxers and wrestlers were not from a metro. They were small town guys who with their grit and determination had achieved so much at a very young age .But we should recognise it and start developing the hidden potentialities if we want to rise to the level of China or USA in sports. They are our new idols It’s just the beginning of a dream which still has a long way to go and yet to be realised. CWG & Asian Games proved to be a morale booster for INDIA as INDIA ended its journey on positive note and with great hopes and aspirations to make the LONDON OLYMPICS much more successful. Everyone hopes to see many more medals for India in the coming years. WAY TO GO INDIA!!!!…

The following essay provides extensive information about the sport culture in two interesting countries. The two countries are India and Australia. I will compare both countries with each other and try to ultimately achieve a brief conclusion. For this purpose I will mainly use primary and secondary sources. Personally, I believe that sport is very connected with culture, norms, and values in each country itself. Also, it shows you who you are as a person. Moreover, sport basically affects the development of children, and as we all know, children are the future in any country. As we have noticed sport in India and Australia are hugely influenced by the British and the American people in the past. Therefore, during this essay I will discuss…

Cricket is the second most popular game in the world after soccer. Cricket is older than baseball and football. Cricket was seen played by two brothers first in England. Cricket is my favorite sport. When I was in 8th grade I played my first state level cricket match. At that time my coach underestimated me and put me as a 12th player in the game as fielder on Long off position which is equal too right fielder in the game of baseball but not as a hitter which I am really good at. There are 11 players in the team and 2 hitters. In cricket pitching means bowling and hitting means bating.…
