CXC Caribbean History School Based Assessment (SBA) Project 2012-2013 (35 marks)
Caribbean History SBA Research Question:
What evidence is there to show that United States-Cuban relations negatively affected Cuba’s political, economic and social development from 1898 to 1965?
Format of the History SBA Project
1. Table of Contents (This is the last thing you must do for your SBA project, therefore your pages must be correctly numbered.)
2. Rationale (Here, you will have to explain what is the aim or what are the reasons your History SBA research investigation and project).
3. Introduction (You will have to employ the following in this section of your project. Moreover, your introduction should not exceed 300 words, so as to allow for an appropriately sound discussion in the body of your SBA project.)
• State details relevant to Cuba’s geography (i.e. its location; capital city, the Sierra Maestra Mountains; the proximity (distance) between Cuba and the United States mainland and the Guantanamo Bay naval base and the Moncada barracks.) You may provide a relevant map of Cuba to indicate the key details.
• Present a brief background about Cuba as a nation, that is, a very brief history of its political progression, (from colonialism to independence to communism), its economic undertakings and its sociocultural identity (e.g. demographics (population make-up); national customs (i.e. language, religion, music and dance, etc. and general predispositions (attitudes) of native Cubans.)
• Briefly outline the main United States policies which afforded the United States to have close relations with Cuba; i.e. (a) Manifest Destiny, 1801 (by President Thomas Jefferson); (b) Monroe Doctrine; 1823, and (c) The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, 1904 and briefly mention other US policies that gave the United States the “right” to intervene in and extensively control the affairs of an independent Cuba; i.e. The Platt Amendment (to the 1898 Cuban constitution), 1901 – 1934 and Dollar Diplomacy, 1904 – 1930.
4. Discussion (This is the body of your SBA project where you are required to adequately and soundly discuss the political, economic and social effects of United States-Cuban relations upon Cuba from 1898 to 1965. In light of this you will have to elaborate upon the following issues in your discussion. Moreover, in your discussion you are required to cite quotations from credible sources, as well as charts, graphs, tables and pictures, where such are applicable.)
• The reason for and impact of the Platt Amendment to the 1898 Cuban Constitution, 1901– 1934 upon Cuba. • The reason for and impact of Dollar Diplomacy, 1904– 1930 upon Cuba. • Unstable governments between the years 1902 and 1959 (i.e. the administrations of Tomas Estrada Palma, José Miguel Gómez, Gerardo Machado, Mario García Menocal and Fulgencio Batista.) • United States corrupt dealings in Cuba through Batista’s two-term administration making it an “American playground” and the effects upon Cuban (i.e. vast American control of the Cuban sugar industry, electricity, telephone, railways/transportation, capitalist wealth control, poverty-stricken Cubans) • The July 26th Movement of 1953 involving Fidel Castro and some 160 revolutionaries and their attack upon the Moncada barracks. • The Cuban revolution and Fidel Castro’s assent to political power in 1959. • The US response to the 1959 revolution in Cuba (i.e. trade embargos, political and economic isolation, the Cuban Missile Crisis and resulting Bay of Pigs invasion.) • Cuba’s response to the United States’ negativity, (i.e. its dependence upon and allegiance with the Soviet Union (Russia/USSR); agrarian and social reform programs.)
5. Conclusion (Here, you must outline the main accomplishments of the Castro administration from 1959 to 1965, despite the challenges they faced and oppositions received by the United States of America and her allies. your introduction should not exceed 150 words).
6. Bibliography (Here, you will have to present an accurate list of all the sources to which you had referred and used for this SBA research project. This is an absolute requirement of all scholarly submissions (which includes your SBA assignment), as it serves to acknowledge the sources (and authors of the sources) from which you gathered information and shun the negative and illicit practice of *plagiarism. Since history is a discipline of the humanities, it is advised that you use the MLA format of referencing (I shall relay information to you about MLA referencing in another document). Lastly, to ensure adequate and sound research you are required to use no less than six (6) sources (a balanced use of physical sources (books, journals, etc.) and electronic sources (online, news recordings, etc)
7. Appendix or Appendices (Your appendix or appendices should only contain information that you referenced in the body of your SBA project, but is either too long or not relevant enough or simply does not "fit" into the body of the project. This may include pictures of Cuban presidents, the original version of United State policies impacting upon Cuba, etc.)
N.B.:
A. * - Plagiarism, simply put refers to the practice of passing of someone else’s ideas and works as your own. This is unacceptable practice that could result in your SBA being ungraded. Please, for your good, as well as the good of us all, desist from such dishonest practice.

In the late 1950’s throughout the early 1960’s Cuba became a socialist country. “At first glance, Cuba’s basic political and economic structures appear as durable as the midcentury American cars still roaming its streets. The Socialist Party remains in power, the state dominates the economy, and murals depicting the face of the long-dead revolutionary Che Guevara still appear on city walls. Predictions that the island would undergo a rapid transformation in the manner of China or Vietnam, let alone the former Soviet bloc, have routinely proved to be bunk. But Cuba does look much different today than it did ten or 20 years ago, or even as recently as…

but even into the Caribbean. Given the United States 'agenda to expand its territorial boundaries their involvement in Cuba, beginning at the Spanish-Cuban-American war(see appendix B for definition and context of war), comes as no surprise. The implications of the United States ' involvement in Cuba, however, have been quite considerable. The argument that the U.S. imperialism was the primary cause of the Cuban Revolution of 1959, therefore, bares some amount of weight. The United States ' presence in Cuba , the de facto…

Modern Cuba has been shaped by the U.S.'s abhorrence for the communist government. Today there are many problems in Cuba such as its waning economy, its health care issues, even its pollution, but almost all of them stem from the U.S. unwillingness to cooperate with the Cuban government, and ultimately, the U.S.'s goal to spread "freedom and liberty" to Cuba's "oppressive communist regime"…

Cuba was largely controlled and owned by the United States. This includes their economic wealth, oil, refineries, mines, cattle ranches and railways. When Fidel Castro came into power in Cuba, many things changed. He introduced the new regime, which America was extremely suspicious of when Castro began to bring in socialist reforms such as redistribution of land, the collectivization of agriculture and nationalization of transport. These measures affected American investors and in turn caused America to react by banning Cuban sugar imports to America and break all diplomatic relations. USA became more hostile when Castro started trading with the Soviet Union and brought in thousands of Soviet technicians. America began to believe that Cuba was communist, which was not yet the case. America started secretly planning to invade Cuba and to overthrow Fidel Castro. This event of the new regime which was conducted after the Cuban…
