One famous game in NHL history was the Easter Epic of 1987. That game was game 7 of a series between the Washington Capitals and the New York Islanders. It went into 4 overtimes. The game was started on April 18(that’s why it was nicknamed the Easter Epic) and ended on April 19, Easter morning. It is now the longest game 7 in NHL history. Another great game during the NHL season is the Winter Classic. It is, actually, relatively new. The very first Winter Classic was played between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres in Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York on January 1, 2008. The game is pretty much always played on New Year’s Day every year. The star player of the Pittsburgh Penguins at the time, and still is now, was…
Hockey and basketball have many similarities, but are unique in their own ways. Both sports have been around for over 125 years. They both can be played in backyards, parks, or in professional arenas. Each sport is entertaining and has a big fanbase, and the goal is to put an object in a net using five players on each team.…
Gillis feels that fighting within hockey was part of the game right from the beginning. Stories say that the very first indoor hockey game ended in a fisticuff. Now it’s different. Now the players are bigger, stronger, and are paid to protect. He feels that it is wrong that the punishments are so small compared to every other sport. In the NHL, you only get a five minute penalty, whereas say in the MLB or NBA fights are rarely seen due to the game suspensions. This puts the overseers of the NHL responsible for the construction in Gillis’ opinion. They are the ones who have the power to make changes to the rules but wont due nothing about it because they want their jobs to remain secure.…
Hockey, about the only team sport where fighting is an embraced aspect of the game. Under certain circumstances though, where two players square off and referees are close by to break it up at their discretion. So is fighting considered illegal in hockey? Technically all fighting within a game is illegal and will receive a penalty in which the referee decides depending on the circumstances, but it’s usually a five minute major penalty which sends the players involved to “the box”. Fighting is governed by a complex system of unwritten rules that players, coaches, officials and the media refer to as “the code”. So the question is, when does one cross the line and break this code? There is no definite answer to this question but it is popular belief that when a player maliciously attacks another player with an intent to injure, or acts/commits an act out of the normal realm of a one on one fist fight then it is considered breaking the code. In this paper we shall analyze an incident involving current Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi.…
Modern day hockey is a very high paced high action game. The NHL is comprised of 30 different teams from Canada and the USA. In the NHL there are 6 Canadian and 24 American Teams. The 30 teams get split into two conferences of 15 teams; each conference is split into three divisions of five teams. Each team has an 82 regular season schedule. The top 8 teams from each conference move on to the playoffs also known as the “post-season”. In the playoffs there are best of seven series, your opponent is matched from your regular season standings. In the playoffs there are three twenty minute periods and a five on five twenty minute overtime session if the two teams are still tied after regulation. That differs from the regular season because a tie is broken with a five minute overtime period with four players a side. If the tie is not broken after the five minutes the game moves into a shootout where the team with the most goals after three shooters wins the game. If the winner is still not decided the shootout moves into sudden death. The goals, assists and points leader of all time is held by likely the most inspiring hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky. Wayne is also known as his well deserved nickname “The Great One”. Wayne’s number 99 was retired by the NHL…

For instance women’s lacrosse is penalized like soccer, where they are given cards. One way you are given a card is by checking the opponent in the head. You can be given a yellow or red card by the seriousness of the check to the head. If given a red card you are out the rest of the game and the next one. If given a yellow card you are out for two minutes, on your second yellow card it acts like a red card. In men’s lacrosse it is very complex. Instead of cards men’s uses flags. After 5 flags you are thrown out of the game. There are many different types of penalties. They range from 30 seconds to two minutes. You can be given a penalty by slashing to the head to pushing from the…

Originally, the championship was held between the ametuer teams and the first winner of the championship cup was the Montreal AAA. The Montreal AAA won seven times in a row before five of the teams were tied at the end of the season. Since then the top teams have been sent to the Stanley Cup playoffs to determine a winner. After the first exclusively professional league, the Toronto Trolley Leaguers, was founded in 1908, they played the for the Stanley Cup and tied four times before losing to the Wanderers. After the last to…
1967 marked a key milestone of the National Hockey League’s history. NHL president, Clarence Campbell, announced that six additional cities would join the new West Division of the NHL. This enabled the NHL to grow from six to twelve, doubling in size. The league would now be changed forever, its historical Original Six: the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs, would be joined by six new teams: the California Seals (Oakland Seals), Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars, St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Pittsburgh Penguins.…
College has so far exceeded my expectations in a huge way. As a new member of the ice hockey team there were many uncertainties and worries, as well as tons of excitements and anticipations. Obviously the biggest part, school, was nerve wracking and exciting too. In college hockey its very common that players take a few years off of school prior to attending, to play hockey in junior hockey leagues. This created a bit more nerves then excitement for the classroom aspect of school since i've only taken 3 college courses since graduating high school, making it a bit harder to get back into the swing of things. Besides getting back into school routine, being a hockey player in college has made the beginning…
Another huge difference between ice hockey and roller hockey is the rules. An ice hockey game consists of five players and a goalie per team on the ice. Roller hockey however, only has four players and a goalie. In ice hockey there are blue lines, which are approximately one-third of the way up the rink from each end. The blue lines are used to create zones on the ice surface. If an offensive…
