Lincoln succeeded the Army of Potomac’s commander James Hooker and Major General George
Gordon Meade took over. “Meade immediately ordered the pursuit of Lee’s army of 75,000, which by then had crossed the Potomac River into Maryland and marched into southern
Pennsylvania” (History.com).
On July first, Lee assembled his army in the town of Gettysburg. When the find two
Union cavalry brigades had arrived the previous day, as the bulk of both armies headed towards
Gettysburg, Confederate forces drove Federal defenders to Cemetery Hill. Ewell declined to order an attack that Lee wanted on Cemetery Hill. “By dusk, a union corps under Winfield Scott
Hancock had arrived and extended the defensive line along Cemetery Ridge to the hill known as
Little Round Top; three more Union corps arrived overnight to strengthen its defenses”(History.com). Around 4 p.m. on July second the confederates opened fire on the Union corps. In late June 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia passed through western Maryland and invaded Pennsylvania. General Lee believed that by invading the North, he could draw the Union Army of the Potomac away from their defenses and force them to come after him. He also assumed the people of the North would be so demoralized if the Union were to lose another major battle, especially if it was fought on Northern soil, that President Abraham Lincoln would be forced to negotiate a settlement of the Civil War. On 01 July 1863, then Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, and his 20th Maine received word to begin movement to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where the Union Army had already engaged the Confederates. After marching more than 100 miles in five days with only two hours of sleep, COL Chamberlain and his men arrived on 02 July 1863 and immediately began preparing to establish a defensive position on top of Little Round Top, the extreme left of the Union line. The hill, which dominated the Union position, was previously left unprotected do to a failure in communications. Using the six steps of the operations process, this study will demonstrate COL Joshua Chamberlains’ ability to properly use mission command which ultimately led to the Union’s victory at Little Round Top.…

Injuries received were a bullet shot straight into his right shoulder, and a hit into his chest by a shrapnel. Due to the severity of his injuries, commander Johnston was able to no longer lead the Confederate army. For only a very short time period, General G.W Smith replaced Johnston while a new leader was found. Soon, Smith was permanently replaced by General Robert E. Lee. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was put into General Lee’s hands, right as battle was ending. The next day, Lee was ready to put his soldiers into battle once again, but found that there was no more fighting to occur. Before Robert E. Lee was put in charge, there was a changing point in the Battle of Seven Pines. During the last few moments of this battle, the Confederacy almost defeated the Union. However, lucky for the Union, last minute reinforcements jumped into help save them from what could have been a devastating loss and defeat. As the battle just took place a few days ago, numbers of killed, wounded and missing soldiers cannot be fully accurate. As of now however, the numbers are very close to what they actually are. For the Confederate side of this battle, 40,000 men were engaged at the beginning. Nearly 7,997 of those men were casualties, and 405 of them were captured or wounded. For the Union side, led by McLellan, there were also 40,000 men in the beginning. Out of those,…
