India is a land where wonderful temples and monuments remind visitors about its rich traditions and cultural diversity. I believe that no trip to India can ever be complete without a visit to the Bahá'í House of Worship, also known as the Lotus Temple and it is this monument that I would advise a first time visitor to India, to discover. Located in New Delhi, the Lotus Temple is one of the most beautiful monuments of the Bahá'í faith built in 1986 by Fariborz Sahba.
The temple is designed in the shape of a half opened Lotus with 27 petals made of marble, each springing from a podium, which elevates the building above the surrounding plain. The nine ponds that surround the magnificent structure showcase the temple like a Lotus floating in water. The ‘Lotus’, the national flower of India, signifies the rich Indian culture and is symbolic of love, peace and purity. Thus, the temple magically combines traditional Indian culture with modern engineering techniques. The Lotus Temple provides a perfect environment to meditate and gain wisdom. It conveys the teachings of the Bahá'í faith - the oneness of god, oneness of religions and oneness of mankind.
