1. 470-399 B.C.E. Socrates believed that we are born with knowledge and by reasoning correctly, we gain access to it. He also believed that our minds (souls) do not cease to exist when we die. Dualism is a concept where thoughts and ideas are distinct from the world of real objects and or bodies. Morris C., & Maisto A. (2013). Understanding psychology (10th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson. He is best recognized for inventing the teaching practice of pedagogy, wherein a teacher questions a student in a manner that draws out the correct response. (Ancient Greece (para 1). This reminds me of classical conditioning.
2. 427-347 B.C.E. Plato was a student of Socrates, and founded the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with Socrates and his most famous student, Aristotle, Plato helped to lay the foundations of Western philosophy and science. (Wikipedia, n.d.)
3. 384-322 B.C.E. Aristotle was a student of Plato. He believe that our knowledge comes from observing the world and made sense of our observations through logistics and reasoning. (Understanding Psychology page 12 para 1) Aristotle studies at the Academy in Athens for 20 years, before founding his own school, The Lyceum, which closed in 83 BC. The remains of the Lyceum were discovered in modern Athens in 1996 in a park behind the Hellenic Parliament. (Wikipedia, n.d.)
4. 1596-1650 Rene Descartes believe in dualism along with Socrates. He believed that the human mind was not subject to laws. The mind controls the body, and the body provides information for the brain. (Understanding Psychology page 12 para 2)
5. 1632-1704 John Locke believed along the same views as Aristotle. He believed that we gain knowledge through experience. His views differed greatly from Socrates and Plato because he believed that at birth a person’s mind is a “blank state”, or tabula rasa, with no knowledge and is subjected to law. (Understanding Psychology, page 12

    Biological psychology as a scientific discipline later emerged from a variety of scientific and philosophical traditions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In philosophy, the first issues is how to approach what is known as the "mind-body problem," namely the explanation of the relationship, if any, that obtains between minds, or mental processes, and bodily states or processes. Dualism is a family of views about the relationship between mind and physical matter. It begins with the claim that mental phenomena are, in some respects, non-physical. In Western Philosophy, some of the earliest discussions of dualist ideas are in the writings of Plato and Aristotle. Each of these maintained, but for different reasons, that human "intelligence" (a faculty of the mind or soul) could not be identified with, or explained in terms of, his physical body. However, the best-known version of dualism is due to René Descartes (expressed in his 1641, Meditations on First Philosophy), and holds that the mind is a non-extended, non-physical substance.     Locke believed that knowledge was only gained through worldliness. He told people that experiences caused them to learn. One famous this he argued is that, “at birth the mind is a tabula rasa”3. Tabula rasa translates to “clean slate”. Essentially, everyone is born without knowledge and over time they become wiser and smarter. This was revolutionary because previously no one had every stopped to think about how knowledge was gained other than schooling. Locke was the first to think that people were born without any knowledge. He emphasized the five senses as well. Humans fill their clean slate with ideas and experience in the world through their five senses. There are many varying definitions of knowledge, but John Locke is the most accurate. Locke defines knowledge as “the connection and agreement, or disagreement and repugnancy, of the ideas humans form”4. Since our knowledge is derived from our experiences, it means our knowledge is limited. Not everyone can know everything since not one single person can experience everything this earth has to offer in one lifetime. This also means that everyone’s knowledge varies and no two people have the same exact knowledge since everyone’s experiences are different. Locke also notes that there is a great deal of unknown on this world and there always will be. This observation still is true today because there is a great deal of uncertainty in today’s society. He is also still influential because he taught us to question those uncertain areas. As a continuation, he agrees that there are certain things that we are certain of. One example that Locke uses is the certainty of our own existence and the existence of God even tough we may not fully comprehend who or what he was5.     An important contributor to philosophy was Socrates (470 – 399 BC). “The unexamined life is not worth living.” This is a quote from Socrates. He believed that a person must ask questions and seek to understand the concept and ways of life (Doc. 1). He used a form of teaching that used a question and answer formation to force pupils to see things in their own eyes and understand it in their own mind with their own words that make sense to them. This was called the Socratic method, which is still used today. He was accused of corrupting the youth of Athens and a little while after was sentenced to death. During a big part of his life, Socrates examined his own ideas and tried to discover the truth behind many subjects, by reason and logic.
