Richard M. Nixon commenced a new policy called Détente, which is a French word that means “release from tension,” with the implementation of this new policy the relations between the Soviet Union and the United States improved, it was something completely different to the period of Confrontations and Surrogated Interventions. During the period of Détente, Nixon reduced the policy of containment, emphasizing the talks concerning discussions of ways to control nuclear weapons. One of the approaches made by Nixon was when he visited Moscow, Russia, and signed seven agreements that include space exploration and arms control, the discussion of this last topic was made during a series of talks called: Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (S.A.L.T). But…

After taking office, President Nixon is striving to end the nation’s involvement in the Vietnam War. However, the final years will yield more bloodshed and turmoil, as well as a growing cynicism in the minds of Americans about the honesty and effectiveness of the United States government. Nixon’s first step in ending the war is appointing Harvard professor Henry Kissinger as a special assistant for national security affairs and giving him wide authority to use diplomacy to end the conflict. Kissinger introduced a policy called linkage, which meant improving relations with the Soviet Union and China so that he could persuade them to cut back on their aid. Nixon also began to reduce the number…

Nixon felt that the tension left from the cold war held the United States back from reaching its full potential, he and his special adviser, Henry Kissinger came up with a policy, Détente, trying to make peace with China. Nixon being the strong anti-communist leader went to visit communist China. He managed to break the ties between China and Soviet Union. Nixon wanted China to support the United States when they negotiated with the Russians. Nixon also managed to settle, and agreed to share cultural and scientific information between the two countries. They decided neither, Chinese or United States would have control of the Pacific and agreed to settle things peacefully. When Carter became president détente slowly fell because of his strong opinions on Human Rights. He eventually broke all ties with the Soviet Union. Later he felt that peace with the Soviet Union was important so he signed the SALT 2 treaty in 1979 (Strategic Arm Limitation), the signatures below the document were Carter and Brezhnev. The treaty was meant to keep control on nuclear missiles that each country was…

President Richard M. Nixon’s administration had to face many international and domestic challenges in the United States between 1968 and 1974, some positive and some negative. His achievements in expanding peaceful relationships with both China and the Soviet Union are contrastingly different with his continuation of the Vietnam War. In the end, Nixon’s scandals and abuse of presidential power caught up to him, and his administration did much to corrode America’s faith in the government.…
