Event Significance
Clean Water Act (1972, 1977) The clean water act was made to make all water fishable and swimmable. The federal government took over the responsibility after individual states failed to do so. They wanted to make the water healthy for people to drink and enjoy.
Acid rain In the 70’s is when people and the government became more aware of acid rain. This is when they learned more about acid rain and what caused it. They also realized that it was becoming a major problem for our animals, plants, and water.
Rainforests The rainforest is important in protecting our water and also in our climate control. We need the rainforests for climate control all over the world. Not just in one country but everywhere. They also help with erosion.
Endangered Species Act (1966, 1969, & 1973) The endangered Species act was put in to place to help keep the animals that were almost gone forever multiply and no long be endangered. Plants were also part of the endangered species act. Also the act was revised to allow the government to do things that cause an extinction of an animal or plant if they felt it out weighted the purpose of the thing being extinction.
Silent Spring Silent Spring was a book written by Rachel Carson. It was about how chemicals pollute the world and how they harm people’s health. This book made people think and had a large impact on passing the environmental movement. In the 70s they were trying to promote healthy environments.

They also monitor pre-treated pollutants to ensure that industrial and municipal pollutants do not interfere with local sewer and water treatment plants. The Act ensures the collection of debris that may potentially make its way into major waterways. On a smaller scale, the EPA also monitors animal waste pollutants, oil and hazard spills and monitors discharge into wetlands to ensure the health of the species that live there. In the water pollution lab, one of the water samples that we tested was from a rural setting. The Clean Water Act would help to monitor the herbicide/pesticide levels by testing the runoff from local farmland deposits into the water systems and working with the farmers to reduce the levels in the waterways. If the EPA didn't enforce these rules, the levels of nitrates, metals, herbicides/pesticides and coliform bacteria levels would be left at unsafe levels and could cause serious health problems for anyone who consumed the contaminated waters. Health risks include kidney problems, anemia, reduced liver function and a higher threat of water-borne illness. It could also impact the population of aquatic wildlife, which could set off a chain reaction in the biological food chain. For example, if a body of water has high levels of nitrates, it can kill off the fish population to that body of water.
