Hiroshima and Nagasaki Essay
Y9 Hiroshima PLP On August 6, 1945, a new step in technological warfare was taken when the first atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The impact of the bomb alone killed at least 66,000 people. This was an event that would not soon be forgotten in history. The Americans, who knew the devastating effects of their new weapon, still chose to use it rather than an alternative means to peace. This project will explain if it was morally right for the Americans to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Why was the atomic bomb dropped? There are many argued reasons that suggest why America bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The first reason to consider is that in 1945, the United States had beaten Japan thoroughly in the battle of the Pacific. All of the territories that Japan had conquered and taken over in the early part of the war were under U.S. control. However, in spite of their defeat, Japan refused to surrender. When posed with the option of invading the main island of Japan, the U.S. estimated that the casualties could exceed 500,000. So they decided that dropping the atomic bomb would be a better alternative. If they did nothing, about Japan, they could launch a full scale invasion on America which would lead to as many as 1,500,000 killed. They believed the bomb would be a better alternative to peace. Another reason to consider is that the bomb cost America a lot of money to make, according to government statistics, the bomb cost $2000 million to make and it would’ve been difficult to justify not using after such a vast financial investment. As well as this, some would believe that America thought that Japan deserved its comeuppance after how cruelly Japan treated American prisoners of

The decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan in August of 1945 was made by a complex group of technological, political and military influences. History has it that the bombs were dropped in order to save American lives by avoiding the invasion of Japanese homelands, at least, that was what President Truman told the American public at the time. “For years, this simple view has been challenged by a seemingly more sophisticated academic perspective that the bombs were wrongfully used against innocent civilians, did not genuinely factor into the surrender of Japan, and would have better served the war effort as part of a diplomatic “carrot and stick” package.” (Beason 1). Some argue that the first bomb may have been required to achieve Japanese surrender, but the second one was a needless act of barbarism. According to Admiral William D. Leahy, the President’s Chief of Staff, “The use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war over Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender…” (Beason 1). However, I have many facts to counteract all of these criticisms and to support President Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb.…

The 6th of August 1945 was a day that people will always remember with terror. On this day, an atomic bomb was used by the U.S. against Japan, in the city of Hiroshima. This was the first time in world history. Before this sad event, Japan and the U.S. were having conflicts with each other because Japan tried to invade parts of Europe and the Pacific. In an attempt stop Japanese aggressions, the U.S. decided to stop the sale of war materials, such as iron and oil, to Japan. This angered the Japanese, and after peacetalks failed, the Japanese made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. After this attack, the U.S. declared war on Japan. The two nations fought until after both Atom bombs were dropped (Ellis, 381-382). Through the orders of U.S. President Harry Truman, 13 sq. km were deserted, 70, 000 of 76, 000 buildings were destroyed, more than 70, 000 people were instantly killed, 122, 000 died later, due to the effects of the bombings, and 246, 000 more were severely injured (Söhr, 2). In this essay I want to explain why I would not have bombed Hiroshima like Harry Truman did, although there might have been several reasons to justify his decision.…

On August 6 and 9, 1945 United States dropped nuclear weapons on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, during the end of World War II. The two bombings, killed around 199,000 people, and until today has been the only use use of nuclear weapons in battle. Why did the United States drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and what was the aftermath? After the war in Europe had concluded when Nazi Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945, and Hitler committed suicide. The Japanese, refused to accept the Allies demands for unconditional surrender, so the Pacific War continued. Seeing as call for the unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26, 1945, did not work, the alternative action was…

On August 6th, 1945, the United States dropped the first ever Atomic weapon on Hiroshima, Japan. 140,000 people lost their lives, most of which were civilians. President Truman was in charge of this major decision, and he made the correct choice. The alternative solutions were much too costly for the United States, both in expenses and American casualties. Another reason Truman’s decision is justified was due to the declination of the fair ultimatum recieved by Japan. Also it was important to the well being of the world to keep the Soviets out of Japan. Dropping the Atomic Bomb was the most reliable and definite way to end the war.…

In August of 1945, the United States launched two atomic bombs on Japan; the first, in Hiroshima on August 6, and the second in Nagasaki a few days later. Despite the obvious diplomatic advantage to implementing one of the most intimidating weapons of that time, the United States’ tactics and goals behind dropping the atomic bombs were purely military oriented; the political benefit was merely an added bonus. The atomic bomb was necessary due to the Japanese’s refusal to surrender and the hundreds of thousands of lives at stake.…

The reason that the bomb was dropped on Japan was because President Truman thought it was the best to get Japan to surrender. Japan was have given two different chances to surrender. But they just ignored them and went on with what they were doing. So bombing both Hiroshima and Nagasaki finally got them to surrender. Another reason was because it saved the American lives and to sped up the end of the war. With Japan surrendering, it saved 100,000 American Soldiers lives and 1,000,000 Japanese lives.…

The first reason is that there were three atomic bombs in the world and America was in possession of all the atomic bombs. Truman believed that the atomic bomb was the quickest way to end to the war with Japan. The second reason is that the Japanese did not have any desire to surrender without a fight. The third reason is that America wanted to establish a greater bargaining power with Joseph Stalin’s Russia and Truman believed dropping the atomic bombs would get Stalin’s attention in order for the bargaining power to happen. The most important reason why America had to drop the atomic bombs was because of Japan’s unwillingness to surrender for the honor of the war and the overall objectives of the war. I believe that the bombings were necessary in order to make Japan surrender because Harry Truman, the President of the United States of America, knew that the Japanese military were not going to slow down on its war effort unless the United States military reacted in an extreme manner to cripple the Japanese war effort enough where Japan had no choice but to…

“On August 16, 1945, Enola Gray, a U.S. bomber, dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, and three days later, a second atomic bomb destroyed the city of Nagasaki” (Hiroshima and Nagasaki). Many people argue whether or not these bombings were ethical and legal. The U.S. killed innocent people in order to “break the morale” of the Japanese population. The U.S. also broke many of the statements in the “Just War” doctrine. Theses bombings caused many people to face harmful amounts of radiation and die. I believe that President Harry S. Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bombs was unethical and he did not justify using nuclear weapons in order to get Japan to surrender.…

Despite its destructive consequences, the American bombing of Hiroshima was necessary to put an end to the war in the Pacific. President Truman’s choice to release a nuclear weapon on Japan was the fastest solution to ending the United States’ involvement in the Second World War, making the decision the most time efficient way out. Hiroshima’s destruction was also, very possibly, the only way for the United States to win the war, because the Japanese were very clear that they were prepared to fight until they were down to their last man. The Japanese military was the strongest in the world, so ending the war with a bang was much more appealing to Americans and the Truman Administration than fighting until there was no one left to fight. Perhaps most importantly, the dropping of the atomic bomb saved the lives of millions of American soldiers and civilians, as well as Japanese soldiers and civilians. This made it not only the quickest way to bring the soldiers home and ensure the United States’ victory, but also the best way to reduce the lives lost on both sides. The Truman Administration’s decision to drop a nuclear bomb on the Japanese was horrific, but necessary in bringing about a cost-effective, Japanese surrender that saved more lives than it took away.…

The Atomic Bomb put a huge mark in American history. It changed the way war takes place and introduced the amass weapons of destruction to warfare. The destructive force also wiped out hundreds of thousands of people, mainly consisting of women and children. Many people were appalled by America’s immoral effort to end the war. Others disagreed and stated that it was a necessary evil to drop the atomic bomb and end the war. Even 70 years after World War II this argument continues of whether it was appropriate to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While dropping the atomic bomb was cruel and immoral, it was essential to ending the war in the Japanese Theatre of World War II, it established America as an even greater power, and it saved American lives.…

First I will give the perspective of those who believe the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was indeed justified. Operation Downfall was the planned invasion of Japan but it would not be like any normal invasion. The American forces knew that they planned to confront provoked and zealous Japanese, which would cause skyrocketing casualties. The majority of the forces believed in a concept referred to as bushido, which demands bravery and extreme self-sacrifice. Honor comes from death and disgrace from surrender, so those who willingly gave their lives were esteemed and respected. This belief stems from feudal Japanese samurai warriors but is still widely accepted as a motive for war. During World War II, when the Japanese air fleet was outdated, they developed a defense of kamikaze pilots which were basically suicide bombers. This showed the United States that when backed into a corner the Japanese were going to fight back with everything they had. It was estimated that invading Japan with a normal attack would cost 1.2 million casualties (Source #2, see annotation). This was one of the most prevalent factors in President Truman’s decision to authorize the use of the atomic bomb. The other leading influence on the atomic bomb’s justification was the Japanese…

In the midst of World War II, August 1945, the United States unleashed the first ever atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The usage of the atomic bomb was effective, but at the same time devastating and unnecessary. The United States should not have dropped the atomic bomb because it maimed countless of Japanese civilians, caused radiation poisoning whose effects impacted future generations, left both cities in ruins, left citizens homeless, and it was absolutely unmoral for the United States to have created such havoc and chaos in these two cities. Being there on the day Hiroshima was struck by the atomic bomb, junior high student,…

First of all, Japan already knew they would not win against the Americans with or without the bomb. (Japanese War Minister,1963) This tells us that there was no point in dropping the bomb onto japan. There were also sources saying that the Americans just wanted to drop the bomb for a test since it wasn’t tested well. (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, 1985)This in my opinion is not a reason to kill 70,000 people in Japan. Truman who decided whether to drop the bomb or not did not think of the consequences of this atomic bomb properly since he made the decision in a snap of a finger. I think that this action was really inhumane and people should not make such quick decisions especially when they are dealing with atomic bombs which puts a lot of people’s lives at risk. The consequences included radiation and other mysterious sickens killing people even after months and years after the bomb was dropped. It has included diarrhea, purple spots on skin, vomiting etc. (A Japanese eye…
