Since pop culture permeates into every corner of American society, the focus of staying youthful in America started, and has continued to stay, there. In the 1940's, every adult male was dressed nicely at a sporting event, but now, a “good part of the crowd...is wearing jeans and team caps and T-shirts...” (par. 2). Life in America has become more casual, due to the relaxed attitude stemming from the 1950's. Epstein does not like this. He seems to feel like America is losing strength as a respectable nation because most of the adults in the country do not want to grow up and take on their adult responsibilities and dress codes. Epstein has not completely given up on middle aged America yet. According to him, “There still are adults in America...Alan Greenspan, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Robert Rubin, Warren Buffett, Sol Linowitz...”(par.8). This list seems impressive, but since the average teenage reader may not recognize any of the names his list, the allusion he presents is wasted on a younger audience. It may work on the older readers who the author may be trying to alert of the youth culture shift, but the list may still be outdated. According to Epstein, “The shift into youth culture began in...[with]…
However, with so much freedom on the Internet and an increase in fashion blog sites, the opposite can occur. Thus, Gaimster suggests the more recent reality of “trickle-up theory”, in which trends are started on the streets among lower socioeconomic groups and subcultures—such as bloggers, or anyone who has access to a camera and the Internet. These trends are “spotted and used by designers for inspiration, finding their way onto the catwalks and then into the upper classes of society” (Gaimster 110). With a somewhat ambiguous understanding between whether the elite or the lower class and subcultures inspire new trends, “we can agree that some styles develop in one or more sections of society and the cross over into others (trickle-across theory)” (Gaimster 110). Essentially, the different ways in which a symbol or logo, such as the skull, is incorporated into an outfit may vary according to social group or geographic…
In today’s world, there are known societal standards set by Americans, for Americans; however, just because the people of this country are responsible for creating these unofficial guidelines does not necessarily mean all Americans agree with what is considered normal. Americans rejecting the set standards within their society is a common tradition of each generation. Prior to the 1960s individuals who were dissatisfied with American society were known to alienate themselves in order to show their disagreement; this is similar to actions done by today’s individuals. While today there are multiple names for this deviation, back in the 1960s, these individuals called themselves Hippies. Hippies not only rejected the American standards, but they…
When people talk about the word “fashion,” it automatically provides a sense of popular styles of clothing, accessories, and makeup. Fashion influences not only on people’s behaviors, but also influences society on a social and economic level. Sometimes, people show their social status through the consumption of luxury goods, while this trait can be found through the history of fashion. In Adorned in Dreams, the author Elizabeth Wilson introduces fashion’s history and through these changes, people can express different belief systems, social values, and public desires. In Subculture The Meaning of Style, Dick Hebdige introduces an example in Britain’s emergence of subcultures, which illustrates people had changed their social values and beliefs…
It’s not the fact that they follow these trends. Everyone including you and me have followed trends that when we look back in pictures and photo and albums we are there with this shocked face on think “what the hell am I doing or what the hell am I wearing?!” It’s the fact that some people don’t have their own personality and they stick out of their friendship groups. They try to be “cool” and “hip” but quite frankly they look like a moron don’t you take a look at you self and think what??!!.…
Landon Jones once said, "the cry of the baby was heard across the land" (Baby Boomer-History Channel). This quote refers to the post World War II era, the beginning of the baby boom, where millions of babies were born between 1946-1964. By 1964 this new generation made up almost 40% of the nation's population. Baby Boomers grew up in a suburban lifestyle and were constantly surrounded by material culture, but by their teenage years they began to resist consumerism and suburban ethos. The baby boomers "began to fight for social, economic and political equality for disadvantaged groups....and some dropped out of political life altogether" (Baby Boomers-History Channel). This resistance from the baby boomers began the counterculture of the 1960s.…
They see Hipsters simply as a style of dress and don’t think about the fact that Hipsters try to be “Counter Cultural” and question everything. Style is style and that can change depending upon what you decide to put on that day. But, the counter cultural aspect is what can be taken too far in that it begins to drive behavior.…
Each society has a specific style of design; some lean toward wearing hats, while others wear nothing over their head. Some lean toward loose garments, while others would favor tight attire. Garments personality can likewise send individuals a message about themselves. Garments offer a field in which we can investigate the social constitution of age. Garments are social curios, installed in present and verifiable arrangements of implications, molded by social and financial powers, reflecting current social and social…
Starbucks coffee, nerd glasses, dyed hair, and all-star converse shoes are some of the main ways to pull of the so-called hipster look. Teens and young adults are all about being up to date with fashion and technology. One could consider Wearable Technology to be the new fashion trend to sweep the 21st century fashion magazines. As a college student in her early 20s, I can say using wearable technology sounds like the best idea yet to have come to mankind. Let me rephrase that so we all understand what I mean. Looking at the current use of wearable technology as a social hub and then as an educational tool can lead us to finding the future of this new trend.…
The most apparent difference between hippies and hipsters is their clothing styles. Hippies embrace psychedelic colors, flowers, and outrageous patterns. The girls are known to wear flowered headbands over their wavy, uncombed, long hair. Their tops were flowy and paired with either a long skirt or bellbottom jeans with patches of…

In St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, Tina Gianoulis wrote “hipsters have espoused tolerance and openness, sometimes engaging in bisexual relationships and wearing gender-bending styles” (675). For decades hipsters lived on the edge of society. They see themselves as the superior group in the category of being “cool”. They don't live out their lives to societies standards, nor do they follow the ideals and trends, but make their own. There is no concrete version of the hipster, just mostly stereotypes that may or may not be true. This group of people changed urban fashion and supported anything that was considered “cool” at that particular time. Once it was deemed too mainstream, they would move on.…
Walking down the street, you see a group of people wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and thick rimmed glasses. They all have similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. They are all holding Starbucks coffee and talking about the latest Indie band. These people are Hipsters, and they strongly believe in going against the grain. This movement of people is very similar to the Hippie movement of the 1970’s. The term Hipster actually originated from hippie. Hipsters and hippies share many of the same qualities, but they also differ in many ways.…
