Himalayan Car Rally: India's Toughest and Most Demanding Motorsport Rally
HIMALAYAN CAR RALLY

-by jaydeep nainwal

Himalayan car rally is India's toughest and most demanding motorsport rally. It is one of the oldest international motorsport events organised in the country, and is the only Indian motorsport event listed on the off-road rallies calendar of FIM (Federation Internationale Motorcyclisme), Geneva, Switzerland. Started in the 1980’s, the rally was claimed to be one of the major sporting events of the country, which also went on to be included as an event in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship by the FIA. While it attracted humungous crowds, it succeeded in making the Himalayas a hub for the world’s biggest men and machines.

Himalayan car rally is named as Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya is open to both car and bike enthusiasts and for professional as well as amateur motorsport lovers. The participants drive through some of the world's highest motorable roads and passes in the Himalayas like Jalori Pass, Rohtang Pass, Kunzum La, Baralacha La, Tanglang La & Khardung La, through the inhospitable terrains in the Lahual and Spiti valleys in the Ladakh region. Most of the drive is through boulders, snow capped peaks, gushing streams and at times, temperature below -20 degree Celsius. On an average, a participant covers a distance of 300 kms every day in this approximately 1800 km and week-long motoring event. Number of participants increasing every year, more and more people participate in the Himalayan car rally, many of them from abroad. Increased interest in Himalayan car rally over the years has seen the participation levels exceeding 200 teams in car and bike categories. Certainly it will give boost to central as well as state govt tourism and also better opportunities to the local population of Himalayan region. The Himalayan car rally is held around October, just before the onset of winters in the Himalayan region.

People who climb the Everest these days can hardly be called “mountaineers”. For Graham Hoyland, the author of “The Last Hours on Everest”, “It isn't a wilderness experience—it’s a McDonald’s experience,” (Nepal’s Earthquake And Why Mount Everest Should be Closed—Permanently). The climbers are often not experienced enough to be on that mountain in the first place; risking not only their own lives, but also the lives of their expedition members and the sherpas.…

Abstract In recent times India is witnessing a series of global and iconic events like Common wealth games, F1 Grand prix etc. These events, along with the international fame, glory and media attention have also brought about discussions on their contextual setting in terms of social and economical geography in a third world country like India. The involvement of the democratic state in the various aspects of these events and their premises has also brought in wide level criticism. The paper tries to observe these developments in the larger context of globalization, neoliberalization and the emerging trends after New Urbanism. The first Indian Grand Prix happened on the 30 October 2011 at the Buddh International circuit, Greater Noida, Uttarpradesh or rather FIA included Indian Grand Prix in its list of circuits through the event. The circuit is part of the 2500 acres Jaypee Greens Sports city, a private real estate development and is expected to cost around 10 billion Indian rupees to build. Thus the circuit is a fully privately owned and operated premise. It was with the onset of neoliberalization state started absolving from its responsibility of providing infrastructure and initiated private participation in the infrastructure sector. Jaypee Greens is an outcome of such an infrastructure project called Yamuna Express corridor where the company received development rights along the road corridor it had to build and operate. For the purpose fertile farmlands were acquired by the State Government in 2001 and passed on to the developer for the project. Since then a number of realty projects involving multimillion investments have sprung up and the farmlands acquisition has continued for more and more such projects by various developers. In India where motorsports has the least amount of audience, an event like F1 race…
