1. HISTORY
Eighty one years ago, M. Manal went on a visit to Burma and saw restless elephants being fed with a root to pacify them. The plant from which it was taken from was Rauwolfia serpentina. His fascination on the plant’s effect to the elephants led to him found the Himalaya Drug Company in 1930 to further scientifically research the benefit of the plant. 4 years later, Himalaya launched ‘Serpina’, the world’s first anti-hypertensive drug which was derived from the Rauwolfia serpentina. Since then, Himalaya Herbals never look back and currently offer a wide range of products that is sold in 67 countries across the world.
Himalaya Herbals products are all based on the ancient Himalayan practice of Ayurvedic. Ayurveda means ‘the science of life’ and is an ancient medical system practiced in India, Sri Langka and Nepal. At Himalaya, the knowledge of ayurvedic is combined with the modern medical research methodology to produce scientifically verified herbal solutions.
In Malaysia, Himalaya has been around since early 1990s but was only limited as a prescription product due to its previous distributors being a doctor. In 2004, Himalaya improved its presence in Malaysia by picking Malaysia as its regional hub and changed its sole distributor to Embun Elit Sdn Bhd. It opened its first retail store in Midvalley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur in mid-2004 and further improved its presence by making its products available at all leading pharmacies on the same year.
Embun Elit Sdn Bhd (EESB) was established by Sue Ong, together with Marcel Gan as Chief Operating Officer. She has a very good experience in the beauty and skincare industry in which she has previously worked with Clinique, a well-known brand of skincare and cosmetic under Estee Lauder group, for 22 years. The good respond on acceptance of the Himalaya product encourage EESB to
