High School Students Should Start Later Essay
At 5:00 in the morning, Joan wakes up. She drives her car to Starbucks, where she buys lattes with plenty of caffeine before heading to school. However, during 1st period, Joan is asleep. She is too tired to pay attention to anything that the teacher is saying. For many high schoolers, this is their daily routine. Statistics show that 60% of children say that they are always tired and 80% of high school students say that they have fallen asleep during class. Psychologists recommend that high schoolers sleep 8.5-9.5 hours per day. Most high school students sleep only 5.5- 7.5 hours of. High school students should not go to school under these conditions.

Students have after school sports, which require hours of practice a day, and changing the schedule would cause scheduling conflicts and reduced practice time for an athlete. But parents don’t realize that sleeping more gives an athlete added energy. Others argue that high school students have jobs that would be affected if the school schedule changed. Managers of the local fast-food restaurants have pointed out that high school students are not needed at this time, since many of their customers are still at work. The main reason administrators refuse to adjust the school schedule is because of the district budget. In order to reduce the amount of money spent on transportation, high school students have to get up early. Adjusting the schedules would force the school district to spend more on transportation. This problem can be easily solved; young elementary students can switch schedules with the high school students.     A study from the University of Minnesota confirmed that later school start times can have a positive effect on academic performance. The students test scores increased by 25% in a study by the AAA corporation, after pushing the school time back at least 45 minutes. They also reported less daytime sleepiness, allowing them to preform better in school. Being more involved and learning the material way quicker than a school with a group of students starting earlier than them.
