This paper evaluates the dynamic stress levels of high school student athletes. Researchers surveyed subjects participating in spring sports (N=77). Subjects answered questions about their stress levels on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being not stressed and 10 being extremely stressed,
The relation between student athletes and psychological stress, has commonly been recognized as a rising struggle in the lives of high schoolers. Student athletes nowadays are playing multiple sports year round. In addition to attending numerous practices and games, these athletes also have to complete homework assignments, study for tests, and prepare for finals. Along with academics, students must maintain a healthy relationship with friends and family to uphold a steady social life. Being involved in a sport has been known to help create a more well-rounded individual as everyday skills, tasks, and coordination develop as well as a motivated and dedicated mindset. In a recent study on the effects of yoga on the health of chronically stressed women, researchers found that those who practiced yoga had a decreased level of distress and stress as well as an increase in flexibility and overall fitness (Harkess, Delfabbro, Mortimer, Hannaford, & Cohen-Woods, 2017). These findings conclude that there is a negative relationship between stress and physical activity. Others perceive physical activity as a “modifiable prevention target” (Puterman et al., 2016). Puterman’s studies found that a decrease in physical activity limits the ability for one to resist everyday psychological stress (Puterman et al., 2016).     Also known as the stages of change model, the main theme of this model suggests that a change in behavior is not understood as a single event, but as a process and that when a person attempts to make a behavior change, they will go through multiple stages (Rimer, Glanz, & NCI, 2005). The five stages of change include: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. The stages of change model is like a cycle, not a linear model, in which people may start the process of change at any given stage and then may take a step back to a previous stage (relapse) and have to start over. This theory informs our hypothesis that increased levels of physical activity will reduce levels of stress because previous research has proven that the transtheoretical model, which has been applied to numerous health behaviors such as diet, weight control and exercise, is successfully effective in increasing levels of physical activity (Jackson, Asimakopoulou, & Scammell, 2007). Since previous studies show a positive association between physical activity and overall better mental health, this theory can be used to support efforts (such as coming up with strategies for interventions) in order to increase the amount of physical activity college students engage in, with the aim of ultimately improving their mood and stress levels. The players risk injury, devote their time, may forego earnings while playing and will not, in most cases, be able to play professional ball.
