High school dance isnt your typical studio
Pirouettes, jumps, leaps, and basic technique is what all dancers have in common. For whether one is dancing by themselves or with a team they all share the basics of dance, but teams will differ based on who they are dancing for. High school dance teams are more team oriented and are better for the dancer than being on a studio dance team. First off, the amount of time the dancers spend with each other and the bonds they make differ from studio to dance team. They styles each use also differ, from the technique they use to the types of dance themselves. Lastly, the way each competition is run and how the judges judge each type of dance differ. I myself have danced in studio for 13 years and on the dance team all throughout high school, and I know others who have done the same. All dancers that I have talked to have said that being on a high school dance team has been more beneficial to them, and more enjoyable than being on a studio competition team.
In studio’s, girls are obligated to take different classes. There are different recreational dances and depending on the studio there will also be a competition team. When taking a regular studio class, non-competition, you practice once a week for the recital you preform for at the end of the year. The competition dancers perform more often at competitions for different awards. The girls see each other at least a few times a week for practice. On the other hand, a high school dance team will see each other every day during the season. Not only are they seeing each other at practice but they also have school together. This constant contact brings a team closer together. There may be a lot, emphasis on a lot, of drama during the season, but that is only because they want the dance to be perfect for the common goal of winning state. The competition dancers may become close but without the constant contact that the high school team has, a lesser bond that is formed between the girls. On

I’ve had the privilege to take master classes from choreographers/dancers that have worked with Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez, and more. Through my experiences in several different clubs and activities, dance is one I hope to sustain in college. Although Dance Team is the most difficult thing I have been a part of, it has also been the best and most rewarding. The five-hour Sunday practices preparing for nationals, the breathless moments after doing our pom routine five times in a row as we lay exhausted on the dusty gym floor; dance has taught me a lot about dedication and working towards my goals. Dance is all about creating a connection with your teammates and “dancing as one”, but beyond the dance-floor I have built inseparable bonds with every girl . They’re not only my teammates, but my sisters. The Dance Team will always hold my best high school memories, and I would…

As I walked through the doors, entering the studio, I set my bag down and took a deep breath that created a moment of relief and peace. As I took my first step onto the dance floor, I knew at that moment my life was going to change and I could just feel the passion that was soon to come. Growing up I had been categorized as the quiet and shy type, afraid to try new things and that first dance class showed how truly insecure I was. After taking a month of classes I began watching videos of dancers and it left me in complete awh. I watched the ballerinas, so graceful but strong, the jazz dancers, sassy and fierce, and the lyrical dancers, full of emotion and laid back. There was something I realized while watching all the different dancers and what they all had in common and that was confidence. No matter the style each dancer was full of confidence and having the intention of not a care of what the audience thought, they danced for them. It was that moment that I knew what I needed to do not to just be a better dancer, but a better person as a whole. Each year I danced I grew more And more as a person, gaining more confidence. But during those six years I found many struggles that helped me shape who I am today. I went through always being placed in the back, never getting the lead role, and worst of all favoritism. When I look back on how much I've changed as a person, it's astonishing. I've grown into this person who is hardworking, passionate, and outgoing but, most of all I found the confidence I myself I had been seeking all these years. To think if I had never stepped foot in that dance studio who knows of the person I would have became, probably still that shy innocent girl. Without dance I would not have became the person I am and love…

In this argument, it is important to distinguish what type of dancing is being discussed, as there are many different types of varying levels of difficulty. Paige Abrams puts it this way: “You can dance at a club for fun, as a hobby, as a serious passion, or you can dance as a career” (2). Just as a person can play catch, which has some of the basic components as baseball, it is not considered a sport alongside baseball. In the same way, dancing for fun at a party or a club or even just dancing as a hobby cannot be categorized along with competitive or professional dance.…

Most of these dances were created by invaders of the 1600’s. An example is the Trenchmore. The Trenchmore is an old Irish peasant dance. After this dance was created, another dance which originated from this it was called The Hay. In The Hay, the female dancers would dance around the male dance in a fashion similar to the current day reel dance. The Reel is upbeat it is played in 4/4 time and cut time. This means that it is fast which means the dancer has to move fast as well. In the 1800’s, there was a group of dance teachers called the Dance Master’s. They arrived at Ireland, going village to village to teach the peasants to dance. Each master had their own village or town to teach. These masters were outgoing and wore bright colors. The peasants did not know the difference between their left and right feet so the master called their left foot, “lift hay foot” and the right foot, “lift straw foot”. Solo dancing also occurred. Only the good dancers got to do solos. In most cases, the doors would be taken off of their hinges for the dancers to perform on. Each Dancing Master had their own district and he or she would have to stay in their own territory or else they would be a risk of being kidnapped. When the…
