In the article, “Hidden Intellectualism”, Gerald Graff, is arguing that street smart people are unable to apply their intelligence to academic work. Graff wants schools to expand avenues of what is taught in class. Graff expresses that the educated life is narrow and exclusive with subjects and text that are boring and heavy. I believe schools should allow students to learn about topics that interest them. Schools should create a setting where no subject is discriminated. If we talk about actual everyday life subjects street smart students would find learning more interesting. Learning about real life situations about culture, society, government, fashion, and sports students would be more willing to attend class if they knew the format of teaching wasn’t so uninteresting.
Schools should create a setting that is interesting with subjects that talk about topics of today’s world. To sit in a class day after day and here about only subject of our history can be quite boring for many street smart students. Adding some form of art in teaching, helping kids to identify with themselves through finding out what they make like to be taught in class would be a good way to teach students. Allowing students to interact instead of just listening to a professor’s lecture would be beneficially for students to really understand the subject.
Schools that can implement topics of all subjects for all walks of life will not just help the street smart kids to relate but would educate the student who is the book smart kid. This would not only be a fun class to be at but would definitely have the book smart kids in suspense. Having a strategy to keep the street smart kid should be the teachers focus to helping them become better students. This would allow the street smart kid to feel engaged and participate in class more often.
If we talked about subjects of everyday life like fashion, gang violence, crime, jails, drugs, teen pregnancy, and teen dating, that would allow a street smart kid to identify and share their opinion. This would educate the class and teachers could also help the student better strategy methods of coping with certain situations they may be experience.

    Graff uses many logical appeals throughout the article to fully push the ideal of hidden intellectualism. In the opening paragraph Graff tells us of how “we associate those streets smarts with anti-intellectual concerns”. Graff explains that young persons who are impressively street smart do not do well in school, and in return schools and colleges overlook the intellectualism potential of the street smarts kids. This appeals to readers logically because people know as sad as the matter is it is true most times street smart kids are intellectual within what they know, instead of being intellect in school which is Graffs point in Hidden Intellectualism.     More than one student in Kindergarten through College has complained of boring courses and tedious homework that had no discernible connection to their immediate environment. Many students describe their courses as lectures that force them to sit and listen to a professor for one to three hours, sometimes without a break in between. It is rare, or even unheard of, for a student to participate in a class-related activity that involved groups, going outside, discussions, or movement.     Generally, a less traditional educational class is filled with fun and it makes students be engaged in class easier.
