DEATH TO EVERYMAN
ENGL 102
Liberty University

Abstract
“Everyman is a morality play written by an unknown author regarding the process of death. It is interesting how death is perceived in “Everyman” as it is contradicting to the way Christians perceive the process. However, even in the contradictions of the play there are some interestingly shared thoughts on the matter of death. In essence, all men must succumb to such fate but what he takes with him is dependent on what “Everyman” perceives.

DEATH TO EVERYMAN

Introduction
Everyman has someone he or she can call on in a time of need. Even if they do not have family they can call other professionals for help. There is one process that is truly hard to find someone to go along with you in. This process is death. Death can simply be described as the change of life from physical to spiritual being. This change can be debated based off of one’s religious beliefs. Even in Christianity there are different beliefs as to what happens in death. In the morality play, “Everyman”, we will explore who death is perceived.
God Speaks
Everyman begins with the message telling it’s audience to adhere to the lesson to be learned about the process of Death. Immediately, God speaks to everyman. God is concerned that no one is appreciative of his grace and his kindness. He feels that everyman has abandoned his teaching and has taken Him for granted. Sin is running rampant in the world. It is ruling over everyman. There is no longer a fear for God’s righteousness. In order to hold man accountable for abandoning God’s teaching, God send death to seek out everyman. Everyman becomes afraid and searches for someone to accommodate him on death’s journey.
Interestingly enough, there is no one that is willing to accommodate everyman on this journey. In the Bible, John 11:27 states, “And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” If everyman would just believe in Jesus, He can comfort even the

It is a necessity that nurses recognize their own feelings regarding death and dying and have a strong ethical framework in order to support the end-of-life wishes of their patients (Butts & Rich, 2013). However, after only a few moments The Player leaps up and graciously receives applause. Jozef de Vos comments that, "In Stoppard's play this parody of death is even fortified by the subsequent series of deaths enacted by the players. Here it seems the parody turns into a painful, cruelly absurd mockery of life and death, an adequate finale to this sour comedy." (de Vos 156) Because The Player enacts death so many times he proves that death truly is merely a perception of the human mind. Humanity only understands death when it comes to them in terms they understand, because in reality, there is no such thing as death. The Player even directly states after acting out a fake death, "it is the kind they do believe in—it's what is expected." (Stoppard 123) Death is man's explanation to what happens when one no longer lives. The Player enacts the only form of death humanity can understand, which exemplifies that true death must be a state of non-existence, a concept which it is difficult for us humans to…

A common goal for the dying patient, family members, and the health care professional is for a meaningful dying experience, in which loss is framed in the context of a life legacy. Such an experience includes support for the patient's suffering, the avoidance of undesired artificial prolongation of life, involvement of family and/or close friends, resolution of remaining life conflicts, and attention to spiritual issues that surround the meaning of illness and death. I have had the opportunity to be present at several of my family member’s bedside at the time of their deaths. The common factors they each had was trying to find hope in the middle of the despair of death. I believe spirituality gives individuals facing death hope and provides the comfort they need to resolve conflicts, release anxieties and fears, and finally to get a sense of purpose for their lives.…

Everyman fufills the assumption that people are judged at the end of life through its storyline. When God sends Death to Everyman, he does not decide whether or not Everyman will be accepted into Heaven. He does not mention what his judgement will be, but merely tells Death, Go thou to Everyman / And show him, in my name, / A pilgrimage he must on him take,(p. 246 ll. 66-68). While Everyman is still alive no judgement is made. He simply continues on his journey. It is not until he is in his grave that a judgement is made. Just after Everyman a Good Deeds enter the grave, an Angels tells Everyman he is to go into heaven (p. 250 ll. 888-901). With this as the resolution, the story shows Everymans judgement at the end of his life, fufilling the assumption as to when judgment will occur.…

In Everyman, a medieval morality play, Everyman sees that he can only take one person to go with him with death. “Yea, if any be so hardy that would go with thee and bear thee company.”(Death, 125). Death is allowing Everyman to take someone with him if he can find one. This shows that Everyman must find someone to keep him company on this journey. ”And you do by me, that journey with you will I take.”(good deeds, 305). In this, good deeds tells Everyman that he will go with him on his journey. Everyman realizes that only good deeds will go with him and no one else will. He becomes humble in death. He goes to a confession to restore health to good deeds; Phil Conners does the same thing in “Groundhog day.”…

Some believe that dying is just the end of one life to get to the other one, others think our soul either goes to heaven or hell or simply other people may think that when you die you just die and there is nothing else beyond that; the truth is that none of us have a clue on what is going to happen when we die. Of course according to each person’s beliefs it will depend on what each think it will happen. Even though most of the people in the world are extremely terrified of death; someday either we want it or not it will happen, we don’t know when, we don’t know how, but someday we will die. It is our destiny to die, but there are some cases in which the decision between life or death is in the hands of another human being. It must be hard for the majority of people to take the hard decision on whether letting someone live for its own good or just letting that person die to let him rest in peace. Taking this decision is whether choosing if you carry forever this guilt on letting someone die when there is still hope or feeling guilty on letting someone suffer instead of letting them rest in peace. Sometimes we have to take hard and sad decisions for best even though it will affect everybody else, such as choosing between the life or death of someone.…

Throughout the course of the play, Everyman discovers that he is forsaken by everything that he once held dear in his life. When his time to die finally comes, he finds himself utterly alone and friendless. Despite his wealth and so called friends, Everyman is unable to stave off his death or even find a helping hand. Though family and friends alike both pledge their undying loyalty and love to Everyman, they abandon him in his greatest hour of need when he asks for their help. His wealth even confesses to leading many men to hell by telling him, "My condition is man's soul to kill; If I save one, a thousand I do spill;" (441-445). Everyman is alone until he finds Good-deeds laying "cold on the ground" (485). Good-deeds, the one thing he had overlooked and ignored in his life, was the only one wiling to help him. The only one willing to actually follow Everyman on his journey to the afterlife. Everyman had put his trust in the deceitful, loved the wicked, and befriended the unfaithful. They were all to willing to lend a helping hand as long as they benefited from it, but as soon as they saw any danger to themselves, they fled from Everyman's side. Even weak as she was, Good-deeds was the only one willing to accompany Everyman on his final voyage. It is then that Everyman realizes the truth; that everything he once thought was…
