30 October 2014Herschel Walker: Everyday Hero
Although he came from humble and troubled beginnings, Herschel Walker won the Heisman Trophy, became one of the greatest athletes of all time, and now gives back to the community through his motivational speeches. He was an intensely hard worker and a phenomenal athlete. He as overcome much adversity in his life to become the man he is today. Hershel Walker is an amazing man and also a hero.
First, Herschel Walker came from humble beginnings growing up in Wrightsville, Georgia where he was bullied as an elementary student. Walker has been quoted as saying, “I was fat…with a severe stuttering problem” (Brown). Before he found sports, he found solace in reading books and writing. At the age of twelve, Herschel made a change and began to push himself athletically. He ran thousands of miles and completed over one-hundred thousand push-ups in one year. From the eighth grade to the ninth grade, he went from being the worse athlete in my family and the worse athlete in his school to being one of the fastest kids in the state of Georgia. At that point in his career, Herschel became noticed and has said, "All of a sudden, I was getting these football scholarships from all over the country" (Ghirighelli). This training led to his success as a three sport athlete in high school. Although he was a star in football, basketball and track, Hershel did all of this while maintaining an A average. His true determination and perseverance allowed him to excel as a young man.
Second, Herschel Walker had many successes playing football and won the Heisman, the most prestigious award in football before the professional level. In 1982, he won the Heisman over John Elway, Dan Marino, and Eric Dickerson who were some of the greatest athletes to ever play football. Next to winning the Heisman, he was a three- time

In 2005 the world had been introduced to one of the best collegiate running backs to ever go through the University of Southern California. His name is Reggie Bush and he achieved one of the best personal awards any collegiate football player could want and that would be the Heisman award. Reggie bush played running back for USC in 2005, he was 6 foot tall and weighed 200 pounds, and he played tailback as a sophomore in college and played in 13 games. He was named “Pigskin club of Washington D.C offensive player of the year.” He was also named the2004 PAC-10 offensive player of the year, “Then He was named the 2005 Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year (just the fifth player ever so honored and the first non-quarterback to do it in 20 years) and also made the All-Pac-10 first team as a tailback (the squad's only unanimous pick) and second team as a punt returner.” Nor do I need to mention that he won the 2005 Heisman trophy award by a landslide. Bush received 2,541 points and beat Young by a staggering 93 points. Everybody knows that bush deserves the Heisman trophy whether they want to admit to it or not Bush was the best.…

In the short story, “Harrison Bergeron,” published in 1961, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. discusses equality in America in 2081. His story places you into a world where everyone is made equal in every way. Anyone with talents, like beauty, strength, and higher mental capacity are made handicapped by wearing massive weights, thought scattering headsets, and masks. These handicaps were set in place to create an equal world within the United States. While creating an equal society though, they are holding people back from their true potential. I believe Vonnegut is showing how if society were equal, like in his story, people would be held back from their natural gifts.…

    1. The simplicity of the world created by Vonnegut may appeal to some, but I could never live in such a society where ones thought process is limited to average and the government plays such an overbearing role in the community. People who are born with “above average” intelligence are immediately controlled by handicapper devices to limit their brilliance. Some are given a device that partially alter their sight of vision, or creates alarming sounds in ones brain. The government claims that this creates equality unachievable by any other method. I would consider living in such a society if the thought process were not as limited. One should be free to have uncontrolled thoughts and wishes as pleased without the government dismissing them.…

    Walter Payton

With the fourth pick in the 1975 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears selected Walter Payton. Paytons career began with a less-than-stellar performance. In his first NFL game, Walter carried the ball eight times for zero net yards. Although 1975 began with a performance that wasn't worth writing home about, the season finale did. At New Orleans Walter ripped off perhaps the best touchdown run of career, finishing with 134 yards on 20 carries. Walter finished the rookie season with 679 yards and seven touchdowns, the lowest total of his football career. Also, the biggest letdown of his career occurred that season, as Payton was held out of the only game he would miss in 13 seasons. Not because he couldn't play, but because they wouldnt let him. Walter topped 1,000 yards and scored 13 touchdowns in 1976, and was voted the Most Valuable Player in 1977. Chicago went to the playoffs after the '77 season, which led to a 275-yard game by #34, which stood as the best single game performance in the NFL until it was surpassed by three yards in 2000. It was during the years 1976-1981 that the Bears became defined by Walter Payton. Jokes circulated that their game plan was as simple…

Hines Ward would have never been able to achieve any of his goals or aspirations without his football career. It is the vessel that carried him forward in life, and it is what put him on top. Ward started out at a small high school in Atlanta, and then he went to The University of Georgia where he was drafted to the professional football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ward was easily one of the best receivers to play in the NFL by far. In an article written about one of Wards hits where he broke Keith Rivers jaw, Larry Brown says “Lesson be learned: always go hard and stay on your toes when you’re occupying the same space as Hines Ward. Otherwise you’re going to wind up hurt.” (Brown). Just the idea that other players would have to pay attention to a singular player shows his ability. Even if Wards big hits weren’t enough, he is also one of eight people in NFL history to achieve a landmark 1,000 receptions. Hines is also the second player to have 1,000 receptions while also having multiple Super Bowl wins. Ward has been in multiple Super Bowls. In Super Bowl XL, he was recognized as the game’s MVP. Ward caught five passes for 123 yards, and had a touchdown. Even though he won this, he was still as humble as ever. Ward dropped a pass, and in an interview his teammate and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said "Hines was going to kill himself because he dropped a touchdown pass. But you know what? He came out and made plays when he had to and that's what he does." (Super Bowl XL MVP). Ward is and forever will be one of the best players to play the game. There will never be many players who…
