Heroism In 'The Outsiders'
Outsiders Essay

The revolutionary book The Outsiders has characters that evolve and develop throughout the story. If you take a long look at each character you can probably say each one could be a hero. My definition of a hero is ever so simple. You need to affect people for the better. That requires selflessness, caring, and loyalty. Darry best fits my definition of a hero.

Darry displays heroism everywhere in the story. Early in the story, Ponyboy had arrived at his house late at night. Darry felt enraged with him and he told him “Don’t you ever use your head? You haven’t even got a coat on” [Hinton 55]. In other words, Darry only wants to keep his little brother protected and warm. Anybody would be perturbed if a loved one was out
