During the time when Jesus Christ walked the Earth, the nation of Israel was under Roman rule and leadership was hand-picked by the Romans. Herod the Great was king during the birth of Jesus and is mentioned in Matthew chapter 2. In this chapter is where we are introduced to the Magi who follow a star that lead them to Christ. These Magi are more commonly known as the wise men that came from the east. The book of Matthew is clearly centered around Christ as King. Matthew clearly lays that out for us to see. Jesus Christ is king of the Jews and also to the Gentiles and these Magi were in fact, Gentiles. King Herod being the horrible and prideful ruler that he is, ordered for all the male children to be killed. He did not want anyone reigning on his parade. Herod was the one in charge and the one taking care of things. He would not allow someone to come and steal his thunder. He ordered this to happen and it did but Herod’s men were unsuccessful in killing Jesus. …show more content…
Other than his murderous tendencies, Herod was known for his building projects. Herod restored the temple in Jerusalem, built many theaters, cities, palaces, and fortresses. His building programs included his palace at Jericho, the fortresses of Herodium, Machaerus, Sebaste, and Masada. He also financed structures throughout the Romans Empire. While Herod is known for his amazing building projects, he is also known for his tyranny rule over the nation of Israel. His anger and narcissism resulted in the murder of his own family including his wife because of “suspected treason”. He ruled in Israel like a tyrant. Herod truly believed that only he would be the king of the jews and no one else would ever take that spot from

Chief priests and city elders of Jerusalem brought Jesus before Pilate to be trialed. Pilate ask Jesus if He was the King of the Jews and Jesus responded that he was. Jesus did not reply to any charge accused against Him and this amazed Pilate. Pilate followed the customs of the feast to release a single prisoner chosen by the crowd if they chose to condemn Jesus. The prisoner chosen was a man named Barabbas, a notorious criminal. Pilate asked the crowd which man they wanted set free: Jesus or Barabbas. The chief priests and elders had convinced the crowd to set Barabbas free and to execute Jesus, so when Pilate asked the question of who should be set free the crowd chose Barabbas. Pilate then asked what should he do to Jesus and the crowd responded with the sentence of crucifixion. Pilate could not find one thing wrong with Jesus or what he had done. Pilate found Jesus innocent and tried many times to convince the Jews that Jesus had done no harm. The crowd then said to Pilate that if he were to let the man go, then he would be no friend of Caesar because if Jesus claims to be a king then He opposes Caesar. After hearing this Pilate became fearful and handed Jesus over to the Jews to be crucified. Pilate washed his hands to show the crowd that he was innocent of this man's death. The crowd took full responsibility for Jesus' death and even put it on their children as well. Pilate…

One reason he should be remembered as a hero is because he showed respect for enemies. One example of this is the Thebans sent a message back that any Macedonians could join them to overthrow the tyrants of Greece. A second example is a woman killed his best friend and she was not apologetic and he still spared her. A third example he let people keep their religion and believe.…

People have been attempting to define the word "hero" for as long has man has existed on this planet. To define a hero one must first appreciate that there are many different types of hero 's. For example, a hero could be an epic hero such as King Gilgamesh, in The Epic of Gilgamesh, or a hero may a simple individual that serves his/her country or even a school teacher that devotes his/her life to the development of the youth. Hero 's come and hero 's go. Some hero 's even lose "hero status" over time; Adolf Hitler and Osama bin Laden were hero 's to followers during their lifetime.…

    Why Odysseus Is A Hero

Such as all his men dieing. I addressed that already and it isn’t Odysseus’s flat. Another one might be that he cheated on his wife. The first time he cheated he was forced, but the second time he cheated it was by choice. The second time however he was trying to get the answer to something and the path he chose was the easiest route to take. It was that or being stuck at sea for who knows how much longer. The murder at the end of the book can not be overlooked either. Killing is wrong but when the story was made it was ok. Of course I wouldn’t want my hero to kill people, unless it’s a war hero. I don’t think that this can make him not a hero. He was getting revenge. Many people have been blinded by rage.…

Superheroes have become increasingly popular in recent times and most people have their favorite from Superman to Batman to the Avengers. Not all heroes have to be superheroes with superpowers. Many people can identify heroes in their everyday life as well. Heroes can be someone that helps a person, for example many people consider their parents to be heroes because of the support they provide them in life. The difference between a superhero and a hero is that heroes are normal people just trying to be there for others while superheroes are made up characters in a book or movie with extraordinary powers. Mistakes are part of everyone’s life, but the difference between a normal person and a hero is that when a hero makes a mistake they work to fix it or overcome the problem. In the book the Odyssey, there are many problems and obstacles that Odysseus has to overcome in his attempt to get home. Odysseus has many traits that make him a hero, for example he is both physically and mentally strong. His…

What is your definition of a hero? It is definitely not a man with supernatural powers that can fly or have unhuman super strength. Many believe this is the case, but the definition is definitely the opposite of this one. A hero would be someone who has courage and has risked or sacrificed his life for others to achieve greatness. A hero to others is a person that has discovered or achieved something outstanding. A hero was a leader who not only had physical strength, but mental strength as well. “He” was usually someone that got themselves into danger, and in cases where the average man would suffer, the hero would have enough stamina to survive. Odysseus shows all of these signs and has achieved greatness because of these characteristics.…

Aristotle once said “A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall.” (Aristotle) Aristotle actually had a lot of ideas about heroes, specifically tragic heroes. He defined a tragic hero as an individual of high social standing, whose fatal flaw leads him to be brought low in a reversal of fortunes, which he later recognizes before receiving a fate worse than he truly deserves. One of the most famous characters from a play in the tragedy genre is Oedipus. His tale is one of destiny, hope, and finally sorrow. The question posed, however, is whether or not Oedipus really does fit this model of a tragic hero. Oedipus must be a nobleman and have his own tragic flaw that causes him to experience a reversal of fortunes…

What makes a person a hero? A hero is a person who puts others lives in front of theirs and treats those people as the main priority. In the book, The Odyssey, the protagonist, Odysseus, does not fit into this definition of a hero, although I consider him a leader. The reasons behind my disagreement with Odysseus not being a hero is because he drove his crew into a lot of trouble that was caused by his selfishness and care of his own reputation. Some might argue that Odysseus is a hero and I have an understanding of that since he did pull through with plans in many situations with his crew.…
