Herman Miller Case Study Herman Miller focuses on a growth strategy through innovative products, production processes and reinvention and renewal. They survived the Great Depression and multiple recessions, recovered from the dot-com bust and were able to continue expanding overseas. They adapted to save the company, by introducing new designs. They run their business more on a decentralized structure where the employees are able to have a voice within the company. The company believes in sharing the wealth with their employees with stock options and tuition reimbursements. It was routinely listed on Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list, including in 2010, and it had approximately 278 applicants for every job opening. …show more content…
Although it is great to set a positive culture for your company is it too much to expect the employees to carry out those values outside of the company into their home lives? Taking risk and spending for the future can be good and bad for the company. The major players or competition identified were Haworth, Steelcase, and HNI Corporation. With competition in mind, the major concerns of Herman Miller is will the strategies that made the award winning company continue the ability to re-invent itself? My recommendation for Herman Miller would be to be a little bit more conservative on their spending habits. If they do this, maybe when the company is hit with a crisis, it won’t hit their bottom line so hard. It may also help the bottom line for those positions that compensation is based upon company performance. Herman Miller also has a lot of programs; they may look into downsizing some of their programs in order to save money. I would also recommend that they consider outsourcing some talent and expertise that they have not been able to tap into by hiring within. It is helpful to the employee’s growth to hire within, but sometimes an outsider’s idea may be good ones for the company’s growth. Because 15% of the company’s profits come from non-North American companies, I strongly recommend that Herman Miller take a look at some advertising strategies or joint ventures with North American companies to get those sales

    Hello my name is Grant Heisinger and I am 17 years old. I live with my mom Rita Heisinger and Kriss Heisinger. My older brother Garrett Heisinger attends San Francisco State University. We moved to California in 1999. We built a house out in the country part of elk grove, but when my dads business started sinking we then moved into a gated community just five minutes away from the old house.     Executive Summary The case study, which we analyzed, was written to study the concept of Human Resources of Hewlett-Packard (HP), which was started in 1938 by two electrical engineers Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. The company grew from a small electronic instruments company into one of the global leaders in information technology products and services by the end of the 20th century. The ‘HP Way’, a unique people-focused, consensus-driven work culture initiated by the founders had been the driving force behind its growth. HP feels it is very selective in considering job candidates. Great emphasis is given on adaptability and cultural fit. An important outgrowth of the open door communication policy is what HP calls “Management by Wandering Around” (MBWA). HP has tried to spread and institutionalize this concept by wide exposure in company publications, meetings and training sessions and by the example of upper management. HP feels it’s the best use of people which aids the coordination of the design, manufacturing, and distribution process. For getting the best out of its employees, HP has used a competitive performance appraisal and salary administration process.
