Heritage is a genetic gene of culture. Every community has their own culture and it vary in individual to individual (ANA2011).By heritage a culture pass onto generations to generations its beliefs, customs, practices, values and traditions .It has an important role on the community for development of the future of society (Culture in development).Heritage assessment is a soul of nursing ,through which provide an effective and whole person care . Modern multicultural society challenges health care system with cultural diversity. Heritage assessment is a vibrant part of nursing because of its priority in health promotion. Culture and heritage is unique, through which our patients has another world that surround them that is unknown to health care personal. This cultural practice gives guidance and direction to an individual to connect the outside world (ANA 2011.). In 21st century healthcare is not only curing but also preventive. So cotemporary nursing promote health of the society, by proper heritage assessment. Heritage assessment tool is a window that opens him as a whole person itself. This assessment gives a concept to deal with a person’s personal, mental and spiritual health. Heritage assessment is a significant tool helpful to understand and evaluate a person and the society. When assess a person’s Heritage it reflects a tradition of how they maintain and promote health , how they restore health when it get affected with illness. This essay describes heritage assessment of three different cultural families. Greek culture and Italian culture and their health tradition, look at the differences as well as compare those with that of the Author , American Indian (Hindu) heritage.

    Before asking the questions from Heritage Assessment tool, meaning of Cultural Heritage must be known. Cultural Assessment is legacy of intangible attributes and cultural property of a society or a group that are descended from the past generations, maintained in the current generation and carried forward for the betterment of the future generations. Tangible culture such as landscapes, buildings, books, art and artifacts, intangible culture such as traditions, folklore, knowledge, language and natural heritage such as biodiversity, culturally significant landscapes are all included in the cultural heritage. Every individual’s perception regarding the disease process, health and end of life is based upon their cultural heritage. Culture not only influences the patient but also the medical professionals, who are rendering care to these patients. Heritage includes determination of individual’s religious, ethnic and cultural background (Spector 2009). Cultural heritage is also used the individuals to protect, maintain and restore health and these concepts involves the individuals spiritual, mental and physical beliefs. In this paper advantage of applying heritage assessment tool will be discussed. Heritage assessment tools include twenty nine questions, which involves questions regarding religion, family, traditions, food choices and demographics. Traditional heritage relies on positive answers for individual’s identification. This assessment tools unique because questions are the same but answers differ from person to person, even the siblings tend to have different answers. The heritage assessment helped the individual interviewing theses families, understand their beliefs, values and their perception of health care.     With population emerging in vast quantities all over the world especially in the United States, it is even more important that individuals in the health care system take a step back and look at different heritages along with the cultures.     What is a heritage assessment? A heritage assessment is a subpart to the overall nursing assessment. Assessing a patient’s heritage allows the nurse to obtain more information about a patient’s culture, including beliefs about health and values, this is important to providing cultural health care. One’s heritage includes information about their cultural beliefs and practices of the family and ethno religious community (Jarvis, C., 2012). Through a heritage assessment the nurse can obtain a vast amount of information about the patient/ family, including but not limited to, where ancestors were born, how many siblings they have, if the family originated in another country, how often time is spent with family, religion, if the patient prefers the company of people with the same values and religion or ethnic background, what type of foods the patient prepares, and the patient’s native language. This paper will discuss what the author learned from completing a heritage assessment tool, the usefulness of a heritage assessment tool when assessing a patient/ family/ community as a whole. This paper will also compare the health traditions of three different families (and cultures) to include, health maintenance, health protection, and health restoration, while identifying common traditions based on the author’s heritage.
