Loft insulation research task
65% of homes in the UK have loft insulation (1). Loft insulation works by preventing warm air from being lost through the roof (2). Loft insulation has small holes which trap the warm, less dense air which then does not require as much heating for the home compared with having no loft insulation. For a loft insulation to be effective, “The fibres of matting insulation trap air within it, for the matting to be effective, the weave should not be over stretched or compressed as the structure trapping the air may be destroyed.”(3)
The amount of loft insulation needed depends on how much air the loft insulation could trap until the loft insulation does not have any effect on the air as it has reached to its maximum. The maximum of loft insulation in the UK is about 270mm in thickness (4). If this amount increased, it would not have any effect to how much heat it would be able to trap. For example, if 270mm of loft insulation is installed in a house, it could prevent heat loss to up to 25% which could save you to up to £180 plus per year (5). However, if you exceed up to about 270mm+, it would still save you 25% but the save would not increase as the loft insulation is at its maximum. This would also lose a little amount of money as more money is spent on the excess loft insulation.
