Help Save the Green Planet

English 1301
26 September 2010 Help Save the Green Planet Do people want more green in the world? Then help save the planet and go green! Going green is an effective way of lessening consumption on natural resources that people use every day. One does not have to be a treehugger and change one’s lifestyle, just try to make a change in doing something different everyday to help save the planet. In the United States, Americans consume many resources and discard many wastes into the environment that affects all nature. If people want to live in a better place, then make the environment a better place to live. Some of the greatest threats that people dump into the environment are things that people use every day. Household items such as batteries and electronic phones contain dangerous chemicals, such as mercury, and if thrown out may leak into the soil and contaminate the groundwater and the foods produced. This is a very dangerous situation because once contaminated, it is difficult to purify once again. It will become a threat not just to humans but other living organisms. To dispose of batteries correctly, recycle them in a proper recyclable place, and if possible, recharge the batteries so they last longer and also decrease the amount of batteries used. For cell phones, drop it off at a drop off center, or donate it to a special facility. Either way, there are many different ways that one could dispose of these items correctly and stop the contamination of the soil.
Vehicles such as cars are also a threat to the environment because they release carbon dioxide and other toxic gases into the air. An alternate means of transportation that one may use to help the environment, is to consider a hybrid car, ride a bike, or a train to help prevent the increase of emitting gas out into the air, which causes the greenhouse effect and a waste of gas. The greenhouse effect causes the ozone layer to become thin, because it traps the gases

Firstly, vehicles are one of the leading causes of pollution. They burn high amounts of fuel and release toxin gases; for instance, during the eighteenth century, in London, this resulted in an increase of carbon dioxide in the air, and citizens had to wear face masks to avoid getting sick. Nowadays, engineers have made gasoline and electric powered cars which are economically friendly, and burn less fuel. Furthermore, local travelers who travel as far as going to work, school or shopping or more should only use four cylinders or less powered vehicles to release less CO2 into the atmosphere.…

When people join the “green” community, are they truly worried about the conservation of the earth or are they trying to fulfill their need to make themselves feel better about themselves through a charitable act? Some people may feel that if they “go green” in one way, like buying energy efficient light bulbs, that they can justify it within themselves to turn around and not “go green” in other areas, like throwing away recyclables because in the end the two acts will balance each other out on the pollution scale. It is like people are using the excuse of safeguarding the environment to purchase their moral superiority against others because they are working to save the environment by buying energy efficient light bulbs even though they have helped to worsen the situation by throwing away recyclables. “Going green” has been turned into a status symbol and is growing into a fad. However, what is going to happen to the environment once the fad fades away? Some people will step up, but there might not be enough to keep up with the damages that others are…

The everyday automobile would seem like a silly thing to give up with all its amazing factors. But do the bad factors outweigh the good ones? Cars are becoming a large problem in our nation, with the effects they are creating on the atmosphere and world’s environment and people’s health, the dangers of driving, and the outrageously high costs they have, even when there is an easy alternative for the trouble of automobiles. When most people think of the negative side of cars, they might think of the gases being released and the damage it is doing to the world’s environment and ozone layer. As said in Running off Road by Grover Kingsley, “The auto is a huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions… a whopping 23% of emissions came from transportation.”…

Secondly, may peace be upon the prophet Muhammad Saw who has guided us from the darkness into the brightness. I also would like to say many thanks to the juries and MC who have given me opportunity to deliver an English speech in front of you all. Ladies and Gentlemen, The title of my speech is “Save Our Earth; Save Our Forest”. As we know, people from all over the world always commemorate Earth Day every 22nd April.
