NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY: ORIGINS TO PRESENT

COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description:
This course outlines the major political, economic and cultural shifts in the history of Native Americans, and is meant to provide an overview of the major themes and trends in the history of Native American peoples from pre-Columbian times until the present. As sources for this class, we will take into account both the conclusions reached by Western historians and the oral history of different Native American peoples. This course not only introduces the significant chronological events, issues, people, and trends during this time, but also aims to develop your critical thinking and writing skills. By supplementing secondary sources with primary sources, this course demands analytical perspectives that focus on historical contextualization & contingency, comparative analysis over time and geography, and the multitude of historical perspectives.
Since a survey course cannot pretend to cover all the important events in Indian history, students who are particularly interested in the topic and wish to explore further issues are more than welcome to talk with me.

    The Maidu were the Native Americans who once inhabited the region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Sacramento valley. The Maidu are divided into principally three groups called, the mountain Maidu, the hill Maidu and the valley Maidu. The hill and mountain Maidu were the divisions who actually used the term Maidu which means “person” whereas; the valley Maidu used the term Nishinam or Nisinan. The differences between these three groups exist in slight distinctions in language, customs, either subtly or grossly, and relative wealth. The Valley Maidu tended to be wealthier, living in more weatherproof houses, and having more elaborate ceremonial regalia.     The Eastern Woodland Indians mainly consisted of two major regions the Iroquois, which comprised of five tribes and added an additional a sixth later, and the Cherokee. The Indians in the Eastern Woodland nation lived East of the plains and all the way to the coast, Iroquois in North Eastern currently know as the Ohio area and Cherokee South Eastern currently known as the Tennessee and Georgia area.
