Helena In A Midsummer Night's Dream By William Shakespeare
Love is endless and come in all shapes and sizes. Most people can say that there is someone in their life that they love, whether it is a parent, sibling, child, or significant other. But there have been some cases where someone fell in love with someone else and that person does not feel the same way as them, rather they felt the complete opposite of love for that person. Occasionally when someone is in love with someone else and they know that person does not feel the same way it can have a negative effect on them mentally. William Shakespeare through the character of Helena, in his play “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream”, he shows one of the many negative mental effects that can occur in someone lives when they are going through that situation. While Demetrius was searching for Hermia and Lysander in the forest and Helena followed him there because she cannot stay away from him. In their conversation she mentioned everything he did to her such as, beat her, neglect her and he even told her that he hated her, but she still did not leave. Instead she says “And even for that I love you the more…what worser place can I beg for your love…” (178). What she is saying it that the more he ignores her or treats her like she is nothing or says that he does not love her, the more she loves him and the more she begs to be loved by him. This also relates to reality, because there are some people who actually beg to be loved. One of my friends, used to be in a situation similar to Helena, she was in love with a man, but he was not interested and she was devastated. All she wanted was for him to tell her he loved her, but he never did, no matter how much she begged he did not care. This went on for a while until she realized that she was better than that and she should not beg for attention and moved
