Heaven to Hell

Narrative Paper Draft #1:
Heaven to Hell
English 15: M/W, 5:30-6:45
Prof. N. Brenneman

As my eyes slowly widened due to the never-ending sound of the alarm clock, I passively rolled out of my bed. The day that I had been dreading for the previous three months had unfortunately arrived. It was the first day of my high school career and I was less than content with the idea of going to school for the next 9 months. By the time that the sound of the bell for first period filled the halls my day was actually going pretty well. I was in a surprisingly jolly mood as I perused the halls of my high school for the first time. As the day went on I was happily made aware that high school was really nothing like junior high. Junior high was juvenile, as if I spent all of my days being babysat in a daycare. Then there was high school, a whole new world. In this new world teachers were cool, lunches were fresh, and the girls were like a whole new breed. The only thing on my mind that first day of freshman year was “Will it be like this all the time?” I soon discovered that the answer to the question I couldn’t get out of my head all rode on the mindset of Mr. Hoss. Mr. Hoss was the experienced veteran principal of the school. He oversaw everything that happened inside the walls of this educating institution. If he weren’t necessarily fond of the way something happened, he would change it. I had a strange respect for this man. I believe it had something to do with the way he had everyone on his side, no matter what. I thought about how difficult it must be to get teenagers to constantly agree with you, especially as a principal. High school students usually do not enjoy anything that has to do with school. The thing is, it was different at Somerset Area School district, and it was all because of this one man. The year went on and everything was still going as smooth as the sound of a petite waterfall in a remote forest

Lt. Audie L. Murphy’s name is recognized by many people of America because of many things he did during WWII that were pretty unreal in so many ways in such a bloody war. He was a great role model of leadership and followed all of the seven Army Values, Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Courage. He was a role model for every soldier to look up to and follow as a figurehead of what it means to be a soldier, Murphy overcame every obstacle that he was ever up against and was able to conquer every challenge he ever faced in the middle of the worst battles in history, like Anzio. In his book “To Hell and Back”, he wrote about everything it takes to follow these characteristics that will encourage anyone who reads to do great things in whatever they do especially if they want to go into service for America, the words still connect to soldiers today.…

The title of the poem “To Hell and Back, with Cake” is exactly what the young girl in goes through to get cupcakes, a desirable treat or reward. The poem has a lot to do with racism and discrimination. It is written in first person and as a narrative with many different poetic techniques such as alliteration, sibilance, oxymoron, personification etc. Holmes offers very vivid and descriptive details explaining what these cupcakes mean to this little girl. Being the reader, you can almost smell the cupcakes with the visuals the author gives. Holmes uses many different metaphors and similes leading this poem to be a very emotional and dramatic poem. The tone of the poem goes from happy and joyful to sad and angry. The little girl has her mouth watering for these vanilla and chocolate cupcakes yet the cruel and racist bakery lady diminishes her desire for black and white cupcakes, since that is all the bakery had.…

Even for a city that already leads the nation in school-reform ideas; the proposal was unusually bold and sweeping. Before being changed, the school was similar to that of a summer day-camp, full of boisterous children unable to sit still. Harvard Elementary Children ran about the hallways, swore to their teachers, and had no regard for school property. One would assume a change, such as this, would whole-heartedly be accepted; yet many were disgruntled by this undergoing. The teachers, many near their retirements, were forcefully replaced and all old ties with students would be broken off. Many argued over the instabilities of the children’s lives. With so much uncertainty in the children’s lives, school was their only safe…

On the surface, Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum” relates the story of a man tortured by the Spanish Inquisition. The man, remains nameless throughout the story, is condemned to death for an unknown crime and loses consciousness. He awakens in complete darkness and is frightened that he has been locked in a tomb but shortly realizes that he is probably in a dungeon. After exploring the enclosement, the prisoner collapses and falls asleep. He wakes up to an offering of bread and water and resumes exploring the cave. The man then trips over a fragment of his robe and lands with his face dangling over a large pit. He falls asleep yet again, wakes up to more bread and water, which has been drugged, and falls asleep again. When he wakes up again, the narrator finds himself strapped to a wooden board with the image of father time and a pendulum attached. He also notices the rats that are coming out of the being allured toward the meat, which his captors left him. He lays the meat across the rope that binds him and the rats chew through it just as the pendulum inches toward his heart. Once released from the board, the walls of the prison become heated and being to collapse toward him until the only option he has is to jump into the pit. At the last second, a mysterious person latches onto him and prevents the fall. Literally, the narrator is merely a victim of the persecution against Catholics and Protestants. On the symbolic level however, “The Pit and the Pendulum” represents the story of a man who dies, loses his soul to hell, and finds himself recued at the end by God.…

Yudhishthira said: O grandsire, O thou that are possessed of great wisdom and conversant with all the scriptures. I desire to know those excellent ordinances in consequence of which mortal creatures have to travel through their rounds of rebirth. What is that conduct by following which, O king, men succeed in attaining to high Heaven, and what is that conduct by which one sinks in Hell? When abandoning the dead body that is as inert as a piece of wood or clod of earth, people proceed to the other world, what are those that follow them thither?…

As I opened the glass doors on a blustery fall morning, strange faces walked past me. Everyone looked at me and silently asked themselves: Who is this new girl? Why haven’t I seen her in any of my classes? I was alone in this world of people I had never seen before. Leaving my old friends and classmates behind, little did I know that sophomore year was the year my education was going to be more than just textbooks and novels.…

“BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP” the alarm screams out louder than ever. “It’s only 6 am “I moan tiredly to myself. AS I slowly get ready for my last day of school as a year 12, ready to graduate, I start to think about the previous years of my school life. I slip out of the creased sheets laid on my bed, and I get a flashback of back when I was in kindergarten. I was just another kid in the New Year. I had no idea where anything was and no friends.…

Now as a 8th grader you can only imagine what high school will be like. You think of how cool you’ll be and how many friends you’ll make, and well boys. Then summer is over and the first day comes. As I climbed into my uniform I began to get nervous. I can remember think to myself if I was wearing it right, if I was wear the simple polo and shirt the cool way. As the bus approached school I remember dropping the lower schooler off and pulling into the circle. Now I knew I would have friends because I had gone to the lower school and I saw the class the day of orientation, but now the older kids where going to be at school. The seniors were parking their cars and walking in and I was stepping off the bus hoping that I wouldn’t drop the stack of new school supplies I had in my hands. Besides figuring out how to open my locker and finding all the classrooms, the day was pretty good. My best friend Anne was in my homeroom and it helped having someone to make new friends with by my side. My butterflies had disappeared until I had to go to the cafeteria. Who ever invented putting the doors in the front off the room for everyone to see who walks in was just plain evil. I opened the doors not knowing that once I did that ever eye in side would be staring back at me. There seem like hundreds of people in the room and they were all blocking where a freshman would sit. I stumbled a little, but managed to work my way through the jungle gym of book bag abandoned on the floor, to a table of all lower school freshman. After lunch the day seemed to go by quick because I don’t really remember…

The first day was not like I had planned. First things first, upperclassmen do not like freshmen. Nobody actually sings in between classes or during a basketball game. There is no such thing as a Troy Bolten. He was no where in sight the whole first day. My new impression of high school was nothing like before; looking at the school was like looking at a jail.…

Everyone has a soul. Every soul has a destiny. In the Bible, God explains that every soul will be judged. God warns mankind that during judgment we will receive a one-way ticket to eternity. The Bible also teaches us that during this life we have two choices. We are granted free will to serve and honor God through Jesus Christ who is in Heaven, or we are free moral agents to choose Satan who will reside in Hell. Heaven is good. Hell is evil. The fact that God created mankind’s soul with an eternal destiny should have a significant impact on our choices and priorities. The benefits and splendor of Heaven are greater than the punishments and tortures of Hell.…

Graduation day was the peak between the preceding and succeeding weeks. The school year past me like a thief in the night, but the three preceding weeks before graduation went by slow. I appreciated the pace because it gave me a chance to cherish my last moments with my high school class. With each passing day, our anticipation continued to grow. Graduation, summer trips, and college plans became the subject of every conversation amongst my senior class. I remember being called to the school’s auditorium for a mandatory meeting about graduation supplies. After receiving word about my pick up date, I was ecstatic.…

The beeping of my alarm clock sounded like a countdown. The first day of high school was only two hours away. I was excited, but a lot more nervous. I got out of bed, got ready, and then was on my way to the bus stop. All I could think of are the stories I heard about CIS being so horrible with all the strict teachers, the really hard tests, and of course being new doesn’t help either. Everyone feels very anxious and at the same time nervous about their first day of school. The ride to the school was only twenty minutes, but it seemed a lot longer. When we finally got there, I was more nervous than ever.…

Entering high school is very nervous at first because of new teachers you’ll meet if it is terror or a kind, classmates if they are bullied and even the environment. There’s a chance that sometimes you ask yourself if this high school would be great as elementary years? Or same as kinder years? Because in elementary and kinder we’re always guided by our parents to do home works from school and they are one who is liable whatever we do in our school but, in high school, we are the one who faced all the things we’ve done and decisions that we’ve made. But the good things about high school is we’re about to learn more advanced things that will help in our studies and careers in the future, and that time of processing, we are preparing ourselves to go out and explore and discover more things in the real world.…
